Hey guys, Ive run into this issue multiple times while playing gta V. The game crashes quite often. Sometimes 20 minutes into playing, and sometimes 2 hours into playing. I get this error upon crash saying something like: Error, try to reboot or restart the game. Re-install if this message comes up again. I reinstalled the game, and my drivers, but this still keeps happening.
System Specs:
Gtx 980
i5 4670
8GB
It also says kernel gpu has stopped working (or something like that)
Im using the latest driver 350.12
Ive also noticed that disabling Nvidia TXAA in-game makes it work for longer. (could just be a coincidence.)
Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried activate it using Nvidia Geforce Software Optimization?

Hello all,

I think I might have found a temp fix for GTA 5 crashing for Nvidia users, What I do to fix my issue is open Task Manager and end every Nvidia Process I see, and it cures my crashing issues, thats with both 347.88 and the 350.12 drivers as they both performance identical other hten the 347.88 giving me a smoother game for whatever reason.

AMD I have no clue if this would help or not.

You have to enable msaa before txaa is available.

Hello,
When i end nvidia Processes, they come back immediatly. How can i close it definitly?

Their is one that will do that, but I have to close the Nvidia Geforce Experience process first in task manager and the User Experience driver to get them all to close, might be different on windows 7 though.

Okay guys, I found something. Enabling DX10 will make it last alot longer, (maybe not crash at all but idk yet), although, even max settings at dx10 looks like absolute garbage.

For me, since they release their last 2 patch I have no more crashing issues (3 session of 4/5 hours plays and not a single crash) I set High priority on GTAV processus on the task manager and it never go above 3.3/3.4 GB RAM Use. I really think they have fixed this bug.

all of you should first check temperatures with furmark, especially, if it´s a new PC should also check:
memtest86+
CPU temp while gaming (with coretemp in backround)
SSD, HDD check with their manufacturers tool
all drivers and BIOS up to date, chipset drivers, audio drivers, windows updates and service packs

auto overclock should be disabled and tested with stock clocks and settings

I for 1 have tested my Overclock threw and threw, I even back it off a little and it still crashes, both my 760's are lucky to break the 60C mark as the game wont put enough load on the cards anyway since like 2 patches ago, MY CPU hits 58C on prime 95 after 6 hours, while playing its at 45 to 50C depending on the fan speeds.

Its not a temp issue nor a OC issue, the game crashes, there are far to many people that have this same crash to be a temp or an OC issue, My findings seem to be the Nvidia driver thats having issues as I don't get the issue with older drivers but I will get a strange flicker as SLI really isn't supported with them old drivers, Lower setting to absulote low wont help it will crash anyway, I found 1 mission I seem to crash on either when I get most of the way threw and have to kill the gang boss as he speeds away in his trans am with is 40% of the time or after I completed it and it gets to where I can pick a new mission is when the crash happens 80% of the time.

I forget the name of the mission, but I will report back once I figure out what the name of it is.

there will always be not only one solution, just to be sure it´s not hardware related, testing is necessary.

open msconfig and disable all things at the startup tab, reboot and try game
some startups are required for the game and steam, eventually these should be enabled if an error occurs

"Official" thread discussing this.. I[strike]t's a global problem[/strike]* -> see edit, waiting for fix.. I have it too, with gtx-970 and fx-8350. Temperatures are normal, memory usage is normal, but the game freezes after 10-60minutes into the game, keeping the window borderless doesnt stop it from freezing.

edit: ehh, not really, I had a local problem. I solved it, now I only have the stuttering that gradually increases depending on how long I've been playing. Avoidable with borderless mode or frequent alt-tabbing.

Did you try to install Direct X from the redist folder if you got it from steam? And the Visual ++? I also had issue where if I kept Shadowplay open for my framerate the game would throw a fit and lock up or crash, same with Fraps even with just the counter it would freeze but on start up.

Yeah, I did read that their is still missions that randomly crash or get stuck like the tutorial hist for me, every time I went to do it, it would lock up where the truck drove into the garage and it would randomly disappear with me and my friends standing there and the AI.

I always crashed on the mission "No Hay Bronca" but I found out why I been crashing al though friends dont if they do the same thing, but they are on different video cards, When I go to blow up them 2 cars that are next to each other I usally throw a sticky bomb or proximity mine and shoot it, 10% of the time it would work until I got to the end of the mission where it would crash, but once you trow the bomb and the next time you aim from a car no matter how long I wait like 2 or 3 matches later I will need to aim from my car and the game will crash, I now just shoot it with my RPG to get around it. Even Grenades do it, next time I have to aim after throwing something I crash regardless of what it is.

It's definitely not temps I get about 70C tops on my GTX 980 and my CPU never goes above 50

its rockstar social club. play in offline mode and it wont crash. i had the same here. if u want to play online then wait for another patch. for me it worked.
playing on 3770K/16gb/970 G1/ whql 350.12

I think I have the same problems as you have. I cannot do a single online mission without crashes. I asked the Rockstar support for help and they gave me some solution:

We would like to have you try the following troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Ensure that you have Administrator privileges on the computer you are trying to run the game on.

Ensure that all non-essential USB devices are disconnected from the computer for the purposes of troubleshooting. This could include (but isn't limited to): game controllers, flight-sticks, etc

Update your video and sound drivers. (Refer to manufacturer’s website)

Disable Background Applications.
It is strongly recommended to turn off all background applications when running graphically intensive programs. Many applications can cause errors such as GPFs, color scrambling, loss of sound effects or music, etc. Taking a minute to turn off these applications can save you the trouble of rebooting later. Background applications include such things as System Agent, Norton Utilities, Internet chat utilities, virus checkers and screen savers. Crash guard programs such as First Aid for Windows can also cause problems.

Windows XP
1. Click Start, then Run
2. In the Open: box, type msconfig. Click OK
3. On the General Tab, click the Selective Startup option.

4. Uncheck the option to Load Startup Items.
5. Click Apply and Close.
6. Answer Yes to Restart Windows.

Windows Vista / Windows 7
1. Click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Click on Start Search
3. Type in msconfig and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
4. Click the Continue button if the message "Windows needs your permission to continue"

appears. If this message does not appear, please continue to step 5.
5. On the General Tab, choose Selective Startup.

6. Uncheck the option to Load startup items.
7. Click Apply, then Ok, and restart the system when prompted.

Reinstall Direct X Updates
It is possible that the version of Direct X running on your computer is encountering errors with the game you are trying to play. If this is the case, we advise reinstalling Direct X. The latest version of Direct X can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

Disable SLI/CrossFireX
Many games do not support either the SLI or CrossFireX features of Nvidia or ATI video cards. It is advised to disable SLI/CrossFireX if you are running two or more video cards in the same computer when encountering issues. Please refer to manufacturer’s website for more details on how to enable/disable this feature.

Lower Sound Acceleration

Windows XP
1. Login to the machine as the Administrator user.
2. Go to Start, then Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Sound and Audio Devices icon.
4. Click the Audio tab.
5. In the Sound Playback section, click the Advanced button.
6. Click the Performance tab.
7. Move the slider for Hardware Acceleration back 2 notches to the left to the Basic setting.

Windows Vista/7/8
1. Press Windows + R to bring up the run box
2. Type "control panel" without quotes, press ENTER.
3. Goto Hardware and Sound > Sound
4. Pick your sound device that is set as default
5. click Properties.
6. Go to the Advanced tab
7. Set "Default Format" to 44.1khz 16bit.
8. Click Apply and then click OK to accept the new setting and close the dialog box.
9. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.
10. Restart Windows.

Verifying the integrity of the game cache (only applicable if you have the Steam version of the game)
Right click on the game in the Steam library and select Properties
Navigate to the "Local Files" tab

Click "Verify integrity of game cache"

Uninstall and Reinstall the game completely.
There is a possibility that some of the files which are installed during the setup process are incomplete or corrupted. Try uninstalling the game completely and reinstalling it under its default or express settings.

I did the most of the ideas but nothing could help me. Maybe it could help you but I think it is a problem with the game itself.

I think it's the game it's self. I have the same issue as you and it's starting to be really annoying.

Once upon a time...I join heist... Almost finish the round... until the screen freezes.

I feel your anger. Pretty much right now we have to lower our setting and wait for an update which rockstar will hopefully release.

I really hope that the next update comes in the next days.. It is so disappointing to try and try to fix the problem and nothing helps

I feel your pain, It use to play fine on my 760's then fps drops down to 8 - 10 fps, this is on low settings, I tried 4 different drivers it did the same thing but single player was fine, though I haven't had any crashes on any missions after the last patch. I now have 2x gtx 780ti's and for some reason the game plays perfect now, and I didn't even re install the drivers, I have not clue what the issue is.

I moved my old 760's to my brothers older i7 system, I wonder if he will have issues. wish the game wasn't 60GB lol.

Stock 1125mhz it did the same thing, and even downclocked all the way to 950mhz and 1300mhz mem, I thought this as well as some has suggested this, but it seemed the game was eating all of its vram and it would swap to the hdd/ssd but on low it wasn't using more then 900mb.

Got it on my brothers PC, and the 760's do the same thing, oddly enough the 347.11 works perfect even with the gpu OC.

GTA V is not a very good port. I realize this now. I crash all the time while playing it on PC. Ever since I updated to the newest version of the game, there have been countless crashes. One of the problems is GTA V only utilizes 50% of my GPU (causing terrible performance in-game) you can fix this by minimizing and closing GTA V Launcher. This will cause the game to work fine until you crash 10 minutes later (90% guarantee on that). Sometimes booting up the game will not have this issue. Since I updated my GeForce driver to 352.86 (released a couple days ago) I've been getting a brand new crash. This time it says ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT Initialization failed. Other games play just fine, so I guess GTA V is simply full of crashes. Also, the game crashed 5 times in a row and gave me a BSOD today.

So, I don't think it's a problem on your end if you can play other games like Far Cry 4 fine.
I guess we just have to wait for a patch.

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k @ 4.3GHz
GPU: GTX 780
MB: ASUS P8Z68-V LE

I don't think its really the game here to blame, more or less with Nvidia/AMD.

"ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT" can be fixed 2 different ways, maybe even 3.
1* Run the game in either DX 10 or 10.1
2* Downgrade your drivers
3* updated to Nvidia's newest driver (idk if this will fix it yet as I don't get these errors but a friend with 2x Titan X's do, and BSOD's with the 350.12 drivers every now and again.)

These should help for the time being at least.

Do you have your GPU overclocked?
