Getting these weird hiccups/stutters when playing GTA V. Not at all sure what it could be. There's a few of them during this heist mission, the most obvious occurs at 8.21 on the YouTube video I linked (currently uploading), when leaving the club. The sound crackles for half a second then everything is fine for another couple of minutes.

So far I've tried uninstalling my sound card and going back to my on board sound. This has changed nothing but the audio quality, it still stutters. Mainly happens when on foot, not as much in vehicles.

8.21 is where it happens in the most obvious manner.

Hardware:

ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
i7 4790k @4.6GHz
GTX980 Super Jetstream, @ 1.5GHz
Team Xtreem 2400MHz 8GB
Xonar DGX (Taken out now)
OCZ 650W PSU
Sandisk 128GB as OS drive
Crucial M500 250GB as GTA V drive
2 Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives for data

Any ideas!?

Solution
By chance did you purchase and install from Steam? If so I would verify the installation (right-click on GTAV from your Steam client library) to ensure it was installed correctly. You might end up having to back up your save games and reinstall the game.

If you're worried it's your overclock you can always test by reverting to the default profile, correct? I would check/reinstall the game first though.

Whenever I go offline or disconnect, it says that it NEEDS internet connection to check activation of GTA V... So how'd you do it?

Hi I have the same issue. The current workaround is to disconnect your internet then launch the game in offline mode. This fixed it for me anyway. Rockstar are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it.

For nayone still wIf you have been playing GTA V both Single Player and MP since patch 1.24 you guys should realize this isn't a setup issue, my setup is a laptop of i3 4030u and geforce gt 840m 2gb vram with 8gb ram, its nothing compared to what you guys have and it has no problem in lag or stutter in Single Player in medium and very high texture. This should tell you guys that its not your setup.

Now, I'm also experiencing this lag/stutter after this latest patch, it had nothing to do with vsync too, vsync is another problem, previously I could play GTA V without Vsync but now I need Vsync because without it , lag will be everywhere (on latest patch) but this only fix the "everywhere" lag, like some of you stated the stutter still exist when you crash onto some vehicle very fast making an unpleasant gameplay. I know for a fact this doesn't exist in the previous patch because I am currently switching the program files (GTA 5.exe,Play GTA.exe and update/update.rpf ) to the previous patch, it enables me to use the previous game exes so I can play without those annoying stutters. I don't play MP , it probably won't allow MP gameplay since R* dont want cheaters/mod using gamers.

I have done this by launching the game using the default launcher then wait for the executable to launch then quickly "end task" the GTAV.exe, let the launcher stay at try again.(make sure you have original backup of latest patch of these (GTA 5.exe,Play GTA.exe and update/update.rpf )) then copy from a backup patch 1.24 (GTA 5.exe,Play GTA.exe and update/update.rpf ) to the GTA V program file folder then press try again. This will launch the old GTA V exe for single player gameplay

How to Fix Lag(une bonne fois pour toute)
My Solution is to go to this link
http://ultimatewindows7gamingoptimization.blogspot.com/

That has stop my Lag
2.you must go to this link also:https://www.gta5-mods.com/misc/gta-5-for-super-low-pc-s
Before You must download(Open IV)at:http://www.openIV.com
Follow the instruction very well...(But you cant use GTA Online with modified RPF

3.Download Razer Cortex(Game Booster) or Iobit Game Assistant 3/Game Booster

4.Everyone will satisfied

5.Almost forgot download these(For Guys have 1GB/512MB RAM):https://www.gta5-mods.com/misc/gta-v-config-for-1-5gbram-or-more

I unplugged all my extra Hard drives. Only had the C Drive where the OS and GTA V was installed. This resolved my Issue. Not sure why this worked, as all my other games are still running the same.

These Stutters/Hiccups are occurring due to low transfer rate of the HDD. I had a 4GB RAM too, so it stuttered like hell, but gave always 40+ FPS, but I got the solution

SOLUTION:

Warning: Please backup before editing.

Edit the "settings.xml" present in Docments\Rockstar Games\GTA V with any text editor and set the values as shown.

LodScale value="-0.500000"
PedLodBias value="-0.500000"
VehicleLodBias value="-0.500000">
CityDensity value="-0.400000"

Now Save & Play the game.

You can play with the values & set whatever suits you best.

NEW POSSIBLE SOLUTION - CHECK YOUR CONTROLLER!

Like everyone else I had the typical crashing issues that have long been resolved with updates. [I'm running a legitimate copy of the off the shelf retail version that came with the 7 discs. No Steam].

However, at some point the game went from running flawlessly on my system to lagging and stuttering and severe performance drops.

It was very frustrating that many, if not most of the posted online solutions had something to do with either a Steam version or Nvidia drivers or v sync settings anti-aliasing etc..or whatever.

For those of you out there that have tried everything else to no avail, but KNOW that GTA V is perfectly capable of rendering beautifully on your system...are you using an Xbox One controller? Seriously. If you are, ditch it. THAT right there could be causing the problem!

When I first got GTA V for the PC, I always used my DS4 controller with the DS4Windows tools. Worked beautifully. At some point along the way, I had switched to an Xbox One controller because I wanted to play a game that required that controller. That's when I started having severe performance, lag, stuttering and big drop in fps isues with GTA but hadn't made the connection yet.

Like everyone else I troubleshooted the crap out of the issue. I tried EVERYTHING....until lo and behold...one day I just happen to be using my DS4 controller and I decide to fire up GTA V...bam...intro screen plays beautifully with NO stuttering at all....THAT caught my attention immediately...then I go to play the game. To my amazement, it runs extremely well....so much so, that settings I had to turn down or off I was able to now crank back up. As pleased as I was, I was perplexed...what had suddenly changed? Then I looked down at the controller. I switched back to the Xbox One controller...issue came back. Switched to the DS4, problem gone!

So for me, it was what appears to be some sort of a hardware issue conflict with that particular game (GTA V). Try it. If you're reading this forum and you've gotten as far as this post, it can't hurt at this point.

Ive tried every single thing in this thread nothing works. I get one big hiccup, followed by 2 small ones every 10-15 seconds.

i7 3930K
GTX 970
16GB RAM
Windows 10

I want to add that I did 300 hours on this game with Windows 7 without a single problem. Only when I moved to 10 did I start getting this stutter.

Very frustrating. I have the latest drivers. Ive verified the Steam Install. Defragged my HDD. Made my page file bigger and moved it to my GTA drive. Nothing.

I get 60FPS but these constant spikes make the game unplayable for me.

, you aren't alone. I'm running an i7 4790k with a gtx 1070 (reference), 620w Seasonic s12 psu, Evga z97 ftw mobo and 8gb of memory whilst having the game installed on a separate ssd and these stutters come mostly during vehicle collisions. My graphic settings are all maxed with the exception of grass which is set to high and msaa at x4. Advanced graphics are disabled. (sidenote: page file is system regulated) the stuttering can be demonstrated clearly in the father/son mission when you chase the truck as it is colliding against other vehicles on the highway.

hi. I have a gtx 1080 and an i7 6700k, with 16 gb ram. I can run the game at 4x multisampling and the rest maxed up, but had the stutters like you, especially when exiting the city and entering redneckland. My solution, was to turn off vsync and enable a frame rate limiter (I put it to 59. With my old 970, I put it to 58). The problem seems related to the display of vegetation, although i'm not entirely sure. Anyway, with the above method all the stutters were gone completely. hope it works for u.

My problem got resolved. Turns out the Thermal paste on my GPU was the problem. I used Thermal Grizzly's Kryonaut. it sorted out the Heat issues which caused thermal throttling. I am a happy gamer now :)

Try upgrading your video drivers plus make sure to close background applications such as download managers or other resources consuming programs and check again. Hopefully, you will see some improvement.
