I play one game, Grand Theft Auto and have preordered GTA V through Amazon and am pumped for it to come out. I have an i7 2600k 3.4 Ghz machine with 16GB of RAM but a subpar video card. I just purchased the LG Electronics 65UB9500 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD 120Hz 3D LED TV. I was wondering if there are any affordable (under $200) video cards that would let me play the game in 4k. If not within the affordable range what video cards would be capable of this requirement? Thanks!

Solution
If you're going to game at 4k and assuming GTA V will be demanding, you'd need at least 2 970/980s to run 4k@medium settings.
You're not gaming at 4k with less than $200, GPU technology really isn't ready for mainstream 4k gaming right now. As said above, you pretty much need a high end SLI setup in order to get good performance at 4k with modern titles, no single GPU is really up to the task. The GTX 980 would be the closest, but you would have to turn a lot of settings down to keep your framerates smooth.

Furthermore, we have no idea how GTA V is going to run on PC, if it is a bad port like GTA IV was, then it may need even more GPU horsepower and may simply be unplayable at 4k without getting into triple or quad SLI GTX 970s/980s (if the game even supports that). Unless you have very deep pockets, I'd say run the game at 1080p, 4k gaming is simply not going to be affordable for at least another few years.

You can get a used GTX 780 for that much money and play on lowered settings. It should still look pretty good while holding you over until you save. As you save for a year or so, cards will become powerful enough to run 4K.

Here's a video showing that the 780 can give playable experience in Battlefield 4 at 4K if you turn down some things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmbpof7bh0w

I decided to suck it up and purchased a GTX 980 for $360. Of course the day after it arrives I see the news that GTA V's release has been pushed back two months 😛

UPDATE: This was a typo, I actually purchased the GTX 970 for that price.

where did you find a 980 for $360? thats the price of most 970s

I know this will be annoying to hear, but don't shoot the messanger: Using 4K resolution over HDMI requires HDMI 2.0 for 60hz - all the way through. That means you'll need an HDMI 2.0 plug on both the card (i.e. 970/80 - check!) and on the back of the TV. You can give it a try and see if you're able to force the settings in your Nvidia Control Panel to 3840 x 2160 at 60hz, but if that won't stick and you just recently bought the TV, you may consider exchanging for a compatible model. My guess is that you'll be able to force it to work - in the worst case - with some sort of work around, but it's something to keep in mind.

Good thinking! And I think the 970 G1 is the best card for the money right now, so nice choices all around. If you end up being unable to wait for more powerful cards or would like more fidelity with higher frame rates, you can always pick up another 970 G1. It'd be a pretty capable 4K pixel pusher at that point, at least as capable as the R9 295X.

Let me know if I should post this elsewhere but I've bee playing Need For Speed Rivals to hold me over until GTA V comes out and found something I can't quite figure out, but maybe you guys would have a much better understanding of. When I play the game on my computer monitor at 1920x1200 the game handles fine and the controls are responsive. When I play it on my TV with 4k resolution I don't notice any degradation other than my controls are less responsive. I thought dropping the qualities and resolution down (even as far as 1920x1200) would give me the same responsive controls as when I play from my computer monitor, but it doesn't any ideas?

P.S. 4k is beautiful

Is your 4k TV refreshing at 60Hz and do you have it connected in a way that does support 4k 60Hz eg. HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2? If not, you're only getting 30Hz, and that will lead to some severe input lag compared to gaming on a 60Hz display.

Some TVs also include all sorts of image processing features that can also cause input lag, it would be best to turn these off when gaming, some TVs will have a 'gaming mode' that does specifically that. If not you'll have to go into your TV's menus and disable the image processing manually.

I'm playing through FC4 now. It's really well done, just like FC3. The games actually look really similar, but FC4 is a little better. Also, I've noticed strikingly little difference in fidelity between the lowest and highest settings. The game just always looks nice.

Also, @-Lone-

I see in your signature that you list "Samsung 850 Pro 2TB SSD." Is that two 1 TB drives, or did you actually find a 2 TB drive somewhere?
