I woke up this morning to use my pc and started my pc. It was using on board graphics. Nothing was recognizing my card.

Nvidia control panel doesn't recognize it. Device manager doesn't recognize it. I went to nvidia's site to install the latest driver and the nvidia installer always fails. I realize cards fail, but this is just getting ridiculous...This is my second nvidia card I have had die in the same rig. I have had so many nvidia cards fail on me. Is there anything I can do to get this thing working? Thanks.

Edit: Also since my monitor is plugged into the graphics card and not the mobo, it must in some way be recognizing it, correct? This doesn't make sense to me.

Solution
It is quite possible the PCIe slots on the motherboard are problematic. Before we come to that conclusion though, I'm thinking you should remove all your NVidia drivers and then try either of the two cards (I'd start with the 450 without drivers installed) see if windows doesn't force a driver on start up - from there you should be able to install the latest and greatest from (preferably) the manufacturer of your graphics card or NVidia (second choice). That is IF you get anything at all from either - you might also check to see if BIOS recognizes the card even if windows doesn't

here is the build:

asus m4a79 deluxe mobo
4gb 1066 ocz reaper
gts 450
Ultra pci e ethernet adapter
amd phenom ii 720 BE x3

thanks

Yes my case is a cooler master haf. I have one fan in front 1 on top and one on the back. Is there anyway I can test the psu to see if it caused this problem?

If only one graphics card died, I'd be inclined to believe it is simply the graphics card itself but with a second card, I'm incline to believe an outside source is the issue. The only two connections to your graphics are the PSU and the motherboard. Of course if you overclock your graphics card, that may have an impact on longevity also...

I had a gtx 260 die in this rig after 2 years and now my gts 250 may have just died after two years. I feel like 2 years of use might imply that I just got unlucky with my gpus and the psu is fine? I have another 260 that I will be installing when I get another power cable from cooler master. I didn't overclock either of these cards. Thanks.

If the PSU is 4+ years old, it likely can't produce the power that it could new - two years usage from a graphics card that isn't overclocked is not good. The only other possible issue would be with the motherboard's VRM - do you have any graphics monitoring software installed like GPU-Z? if so what are the voltages reported for the graphics card?

The gts450 is currently unrecognized so I can not use gpu-z to check the voltages. Thanks.

I took the gts450 and moved it to three different pcie ports and it still didn't recognize the card.

I got the other cable to hook up the 260 today, so I tried putting the gtx 260 in and that wasn't recognized either 🙁.

So neither card works. Is it possible that the something on my mobo cooked?

Could it be something glitched on the software end ( should I reinstall nvidia control panel?)?

Or do you think the psu isn't delivering enough power to the gpu (would it even turn on if this was the case?)?

I still think it's odd that the gpu isn't recognized, but yet I can still hook my monitor up the gpu and use onboard graphics.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I thought the pcie ports could be shot as well, but my LAN card stil lworks on one of them (although LAN cards don't utilize the entire slot).

I will try your suggestions tomorrow and report back. Thanks for your help.
