Hi Guys

I got a pc whic is my mediaplayer on a full HD tv,is also my home storage with 2*2T mirrored drives and has a ssd as boot.
Because i convert movies and work whit large raw files i equipped it with 8gb ram and a nice Q8400..

Now,thing is,since i installed the GTS450, OC version from Gigabyte,it seems to me that i am wasting a lot of power if the pc is used for download,to share data from the HDDs,browsing internet....not graphical stuff basically.

I did downclock the Video with MSI afterburner and now total pc consumption is about 85-105watts.

Would it make sense to replace the video with a more efficient HD7750/7770?

The price of the 2 is basically the same here (holland) and looks like one takes 55w the other 80.the GTS uses 106w on paper...

Suggestions?Ideas? or you think is better to keep the GTS450 downcloacked?

Thanks

Gabriele

I feel adding anything while not gaming is a waste. From what you just described you could sell the 450 used for whatever and get a 6450 which uses far less power and can perform the tasks you need while drawing far less power.
Otherwise simply downclock the 450 as low as possible.

I am planning to use this pc for some more video editing later and i want to maintaine a level of upgradibility :) to downgrade is not an option!i may play some games in the future like borderlands2 or simcity5

The power that you mentioned (55w, 80w and 106w) is used only when the cards are under load, that means only when graphically intense stuff is going on. When nothing graphically is going on, they consume much less energy.

I don't think exchanging graphics card to HD 7750 makes any sense just for the power consumption. You will pay more for the card than you will ever save from saving electricity.

Ah so basically the TDP is the MAX usage and not an average...so yeah,i mean the performance are basically the same, and the power in Idle wont change much...i guess i will keep my pretty card ":)

Thanks for the help guys!

Load power draw usage would be a little more helpful

Well,,i installed asus AI suite, whic should work that way...but somehow everytime i restart the pc i find it set to "rocket" or other modes rather than "maximum power save" as i did let it.

Then MSI afterburner to power done the video card...

It would be great to be able to downclock cpu and gpu when browsing or having the pc on just to share the hardrives in the nretwork, and to "awake" it when processing video Bluray or converting movies...somehow i dont seem to be able to do this with this rig,but i used to do this when i had a nvidia mobo, all via system tools...

There is the other possibility,to put the 4Tera in a nas storage...and let them on...and use this pc just as a player/downloader/movie edit...a storageless workstation
