I have the mentioned video cards, based on that alone which would you recommend and why?

Some additional info about the PC

Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601.24443)
4.00 gigahertz Intel Core i7-4790K
Z97 GAMING 5 (MS-7917) 1.0
32 GB RAM

The RAM, CPU and all 3 cards can and will be overclocked in the future.

Going for an SLI isn't worth the hassle these days. Not many games scale well on such an setup....You would be better off buying some other high-end GPU. What's your budget ? Also, list the make and model number of your PSU.

Btw, the GTX 970 is a 4GB card (3.5+0.5)....You wrote 2GB in the topic's heading.

I built this computer quite a few years ago (6 perhaps?) and have all the mentioned hardware already. They are 2x GeForce 950's (2GB each), not 970's and the 1050Ti
The PSU is a Corsair CX750M

GTX 950 SLI will be slightly faster than a single GTX 1050 Ti, yes. If you can stand the micro-stutter you're likely to get. And if you can live with only 2GB VRAM which will limit your in-game settings.
The single GTX 1050 Ti is the safer choice, and sell the GTX 950.
