Let me start of by saying my system specs. monitor 1080p 144hz i7 4820k 16gb 1600mhz ram 800 watt power supply and a gtx 1080. gpu usage is low on pretty much all my games. It can be like even just 20 or 40% which should not be happening. Now the thing is i know what the problem is, it's a cpu bottleneck. Wen i up the resolution my gpu usage increases. But i was wondering if there is anything i can do to up my gpu usage instead of having to spend even more money on a 1440p monitor. Thanks in advance!

Solution

I agree, the reason your GPU usage is 'low' is because the GPU isn't being stressed. The fact that increasing the resolution increases GPU utilisation is proof of that.

If you aren't getting a constant 144hz refresh rate then there's probably another reason for it. What games are we talking about here?
That'll probably give you the biggest answer, if the overclocking goes well and your GPU usage shoots up, that's the issue. Otherwise something else is going on.

One thing I know for sure, this is NOT NORMAL for a 1080, it should definitely be being pushed and give more fps.

Okay so my base speed is 37 and i just overclocked to 42 And it didn't improve any thing. I still get about the same fps and gpu usage 🙁

So ruling out the CPU is good. Next I would say check the RAM.

It would also be a good idea to do a Firestrike benchmark, that will tell you ONLY your GPU's score which you could compare to other 1080's to see if yours is performing properly. I believe the basic one is free.

Okay so i just did the benchmark
SCORE
6 536 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-4820K
Graphics Score 7 396
CPU Score 3 941
I don't know where i can find other 1080s to compare to.

Not that i know off i just have the free version so there was only one option i could use and why is it low what should i normally get? I'm using time spy

Okay so I found some comparisons and it seems the results show your GPU is fine but your CPU may be underperforming. But your GPU seems to be perfectly fine. Other system with similar RAM situations are performing a little better, so I don't think it is the RAM.

Try this one and see what it says (make sure you close all background programs that are eating up a lot of CPU juice)

To keep it easy i'l just give the link

So your hardware seems to be working fine. That leaves one option... software, and unfortunately that means the biggest pain in the @$$ to deal with...
I would set the Nvidia Control Panel settings under power management to prefer maximum performance and adjust any other similar settings to max performance, etc. Make sure there are no limiters running. If you are running games and it says limit memory bandwidth or cap memory usage, turn it off.

I have all ready did the nvidia thing and i did the same in windows it's self to let every thing run at it's full speed. And i all ways make sure there are no settings to limit in game.

That's what I meant when I said the biggest pain in the @$$, it could literally be 1 of 1000 things... Last time I had issues I changed a seemingly meaningless setting in the NCP and it fixed all my problems. I don't know what to say except keep trying to tweak. It could literally be something as stupid as the display cable you are using. Keep trying different settings in the NCP and see what happens.

Can you open the case and have a look?

It's an alienware aurora r4 so i'm guessing it's custom like the motherboard and watercooling they use. The power supply wen i open my case is like blocked off i can barely see the front.

OK, yes, it'll have a Dell branded PSU, which is nothing to write home about.

According to Dell's spec, the PSU will have four +12V rails which only deliver 18A each. I suggest you check that the two 8-pin PCIe connectors aren't connected to the same +12V rail and move one of them to a different rail if they are.

What do you mean with different rail? I have 4 cables i used 2 pin that where connected to the same cable that splits it'self. Do i need to use 2 different ones?

So last year my friend and i build his pc together so i know what i'm doing but this alienware psu is so weird. All cables are like together in one slot on the psu. Yes very weird. I only have two 8 pin connectors so i there is not any other i can use and i can't replace them either very frustrating and annoying. My second pc is gonna be custom build that's for sure.

An 800W PSU with just two PCIe connectors is a sign of poor quality in my opinion, as even average quality PSUs will have four connectors. As usual, OEMs tout the wattage to make their product look good.

The Aurora R4 looks like it uses a standard ATX PSU, so can you swap it for another? It'd be good to know if that's the problem before you fork over any money. That said, if the computer is no longer under warranty, I'd probably replace the PSU anyway.

The warranty is long gone. The problem is i don't have any other psu laying around. And i can't get any that is power full enough. I don't want to spend more money just to find out my psu is not the problem. I'm just gonna wait until i'm on mission and wen i get back i build my own pc.
