Depends. What are you doing? If you are gaming on 1080p (which you should not be doing with a 1080), the CPU will prob bottleneck. If you are rendering, depending on the software, also possible. If you are gaming at 4k, the 1080 will get a run for its money.

Then the GTX 1080 is a waste of money, to put it lightly. Yes, you can get like 600 frames per second, but chances are your monitor is only capable of displaying 60 FPS. The GTX 1080 is meant for 4K gaming and the like, not for 1080p. Even the 1070 is overkill, as it can outperform the last generation Titan X.

Then you do not need a gtx 1080. you can spend $200-$300 less on a card that can max games in 1080p.

A 980 ti is currently not much cheaper than a 1080. I would go with a cheaper card if you are not planning to upgrade to 1440p or 4k monitor.
