Well, it's wait and see until AMD/ATI releases the 4xxx series.

Just based on the performance chart of the GTX 280/260, I would probably go with the GTX 260 one it reaches a good price point. It should be a big step up from my ATI X1900XT 512MB (a little loud and consumes around 110w under full load from what I remember). Let's see if I can hold out until it is shrunk down to a 55mm die priocess.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how AMD/ATI 4xxxx compares against the GTX 280/260.

Why are all these review testing games at such high resolutioins?? I bet you that the results would have been even more pitiful than these had they tested at 12x10 and 16x12.

Because the setting for the old card is at Medium where as GTX 280 is on High.

NO!NO!NO!

the 9800GX2 SLI dont scale well at all.but in theory it will beat 3way SLI GTX 280.

3 way 8800GTX? dont even mention it!

Off topic...I am honestly surprised that you can get resonably recent hardware in Iran, especially internet, seeing as how that is one of the things that was invented by the corrupt horrible west (so to speak).

How much of an issue is censorship in that area (if you can say w/o trouble)...reason I asked is this...

stuff like this and prison for saying someones govt. sucks seems crazy to me, and it seems like the middle east would be against the internet. No offense, just wouldn't think ogf high tech computers and internet being available over in that part of the world.

then why you buy a top card to play at average resolution? i think the answer is in the question if you can understand.

I'm so agreeing with you.
I'll pay top dollar fully realizing that the p/p ratio is less but for top dollar I want top performance. Back in Dec. 06 I paid 699CDN for my 8800gtx and would happily spend as much again for the same kind of leap. Maybe it's time to start embracing multi GPU.

well yeah, I always bought what I could afford, hel before this I had my xp 1700 >2800 and my radeon 8500le till last year..then moved up to a 7600gs for a few months till last month...so yeah, I wanted to own the BOMB for once and see...now I really can't unless the 4780x2 is crazy fast.

That is what I plan to do. I am going to wait for some benchies on the 4870. See if it is a surprise or not. Wait a month or so to see if they drop those 280 prices due to the 4870 doing really well at its price range and if within that month. If the price isnt down and the 4870 doesnt look like to good of a solution to pass up. I am probably just goin to go ahead and get the 280. It is still around a 40% improvement over my card even with its early beta drivers.

Best,

3Ball

No i know what u mean, there are lots of filtering in IRAN, but fortunately most tech sites arent filtered here and i try to update myself everyday :)

how many reviews did you read? i read more then 10 so far.

it will be upto the price for the 4870X2. if its near the GTX 280 i would get the GTX 280. because better driver will improve its performance. plus i still not so confident about AMD's driver support even though they are frequetly then Nvidia's.

i think in game performance is more important the 3dmark. anyone remember AMD release a Catalyst for the 2900XT or 3870X2 cant remember exactly, and that Catalyst specially aimed at 3Dmark so it will look superior. but in game you dont see much of a increase.

Well i read the tomshardware GTX 280 review, 3x 8800ULTRA vs 9800GX2, Anandtechs 3x GTX 280 vs 2 9800GX2

and according to them (3x GTX 280 vs 2 9800GX2) 2 9800GX2 managed to win in most cases

and in the 3way 8800ULTRA vs 2x 9800GX2 in most games the 3 way 8800ULTRA won

so i thought that 3 way 8800ULTRA will beat 3 way GTX 280

I actually prefer tests at higher resolution since my monitor's native resolution is 1920 x 1200.

look at this one. in the chart the SLI 9800GX2 give same or lower fps then GTX 280 in SLI. 4GPU vs 2GPU = same fps?

i think you should get the idea about wha ti try to say.

also just note in the chart for the 3 way SLI they have put the wrong colour for the bar, when you actually look at the comment under the chart they've got GTX 260 written all over it.

you see you didnt read the spec sheet for all the cards. 9800GX2 limited by 256bit bus where as ultra got 364bit. and now GTX 280 got 512bit and got 1GB of vram which is bigger then any of those you mentioned. plus the rendering power is unmatched for all the other cards from the spec point of view.

^ i agree with jaguarskx

either way these results SUCK... I was expecting it to be a little bit better than the 9800 GX2... but in most of the tests it doesn't even come close to it....

also considering that the 9800 gx2 is much cheaper... what would be the point to buy the gtx 280... either card would be a major step up from my 8800 gts 640... but seriously... they've had 2 years to really make something amazing... and they F*CKNG THREW OUT THEIR CHANCE

stupid... now the balls in AMDs side... if the 4870 is a flop as well then i'll just be waiting for the next generation of cards

don't get pissed at me =P

thogrom people cant wait for the next gen anymore.look at how long people wait from 8800GTX and even from 7950's. 9800GX2 is very good for its performance now.the driver is doing the job quite well now. but there are still room for improvement obviously. and this rule also apply to the new GT200 cards. when the next driver come out maybe the situation will change a bit. so the price of these might also change.

That'd have to be one hell of a driver...I can't see it making that much difference to put it ahead of the gx2.

No, the 9800GTX SLI and the GTX 280 are both at high. But the point I was trying to make is the 9800GX2 is medium/high and lower AF, yet performs much lower than the 9800GTX SLI (which is at higher settings). That makes no sense. The GX2 at lower settings should score higher than the 9800GTX SLI or the GTX280 does at those higher settings. Had it been equal settings it still should have just been a few fps behind the 9800GTX SLI combo.
