Hi all

Just want everyones opinion.

Is the GTX 285 that much better than the GTX 280?

I know is its 55nm and less power/heat but is it any better performance wise?
I am going to get one of them, just need to decide which one.

Here's the thing i can get them at

GTX 285 at around $500 ₤357
GTX 280 at around $430 ₤307

So is there enough performance increase in the 285 from the 280 to justify $70 ₤50 bucks?

Thanks

285 GTX is 10-15% better, depending on the game (give or take). But it's OC potential is what seals the deal:)

I'm running 755 mhz now @ 3ghz memory😀

Thanks for the reply

Any one else got any advice on which i should get?

My main question is, is $70 or 50 pounds worth getting the 285 over the 280? Is there enough improvement from the 285 to spend the extra money?

Do you plan on overclocking? As LIQUID has said, the GTX285 has more potential there than the GTX280 but if you do n`t want to overclock the small performance gains of the GTX285 are not worth paying too much for.
And where are you KDES? Prices vary hugely and what is a good deal in the US may not be here in the UK.

Uh, no. Thats not how things work. If its faster, its typically more expensive. Especially when you need to create new machines and facilities to produce smaller manufacturing processes. :)

well technically the card is more expensive than the 280 GTX, but its less expensive than what the 280 GTX was before the launch of the 285 GTX:). So the 280s have dropped down hard in price:)

not 10-15%. Maybe a bit more then 5% in most games. However you are right, the extra overclocking from the 55nm transition may or may not be worth it. If you have to pay more then $15 extra for the 285 then forget it.

Just my $.02

Actually in guru3D for their review, the 285 GTX is 10% across the board, and was seen being 15% in certain games. When it was overclocked even higher, it manages 20% increase over the 285 GTX in some tests:). I tested it out, and its quite accurate. The only game I don't yeild what I want to see is Crysis and clear Sky (Idunno maybe because its not orginal). Though, I did see some very nice gains ocing the 285s to 755 mhz😀 with 3 ghz memory! hahah. Honestly the 2 cards perform like my 3 system, I'm very satisfied.

So am I. The benchies i saw when the card first came out were less then that. The overall increase in clock speed is about 8% from the GTX280, so that really surprises me.

THG articles have been downhill for a couple of years now. I don't trust them until I see other sites confirming the same thing.

dont forget the 285 bumps out less heat and requires only 2 6 pin connector and not a 6 + 8 pin connector😉

While stock is only 10-15% difference (sometimes none), its overclocking (if done well) can make it a new card compared to the 280s:)

Though if the 285 is 50 or more over, then it aint worth it.

P.S

DoomsdayDave It has 8% core clock increase your right, but it also has 12% memory Sp[eed increase and 14% Shader Mhz increase:)
