GTX 295 vs 2x GTX 285 in SLI

With Max AA/AF and Very High settings good luck getting very far over 60fps in Crysis @ resolutions at 1920x1200 or higher. Quad SLI 295's or Tri SLI 285's are the only setups that are even going to get near your desired 72 fps in Crysis. If you overclock the crap outta three 285's 72 fps solid gameplay should be possible but anything less good luck seeing anything over 60fps lol.

SO then if the price is better to get 2 x GTX260 it would be better to go that route.... vs getting a GTX 295?

I ordered an GTX 295, and had plans to refuse shipment.... to order 2 GTX285's.
 


??? no way one GTX 285 is faster/better than a 295... You are comparing an overclocked GTX 280 to a dual hybrid GTX 260 and GTX 280...

And if you want over 60FPS, what resolution do you play on? what game? Good luck getting over 60 fps on Crysis at highest settings...

Personally on my 1080p 42 inch i am good with just one GTX 295 i7 920 and get average high 30's FPS..... and am happy with the results...
 



Woah slow down 😱 . I never in any post said I wanted 60-100 fps in Crysis. I said what games I played. I only HELPED answer some of my own questions/and other posters by researching what the human eye CAN see.... I provide nip from that article and I posted the link. While i admit I didn't like the sound of 30fps, i never made that public as i didn't know what could and could not be achieved with either of these cards. I think some of you are mixing ME up with michaelmk86.

That said, It has already been made VERY CLEAR that an single 295 is better then a single 285. I furthered the thread in the last post by asking if an 295 was == 2 x 260's..... based on how I understand the replies. Meaning if you can can get 2 of the 260s for about $200 each... or 1 of the 295's for $500... how would you go?

My original issue is the decision between the 295 vs the 285 or 2x 285. Based on USER reviews on the Tiger and Newegg web sites, I thought the single 295 was > then 2 of the 285's... thus my appearance in these forums.

As for the GTX 280's... dunno how the hell those got in the works... but it seems they are now being compared to the 295 and the 285 as well.

I originally was going to purchase 2 x 285 for SLI. Read reviews and seeing ALL the happy campers saying it is the fastest and latest and greatest, I elected to go with 1 295. The card is due on my door step Thursday. I started feeling a tad dumb ass for not reading TRUE reviews and came here.

By going with a SINGLE 295 I save my budget about $150 that I could put in other hardware that NEEDS more help. I dont want to give up much performance. The rig im building is my first beast. (well a least to me)

The video cards is what is killing me.
 
It's my understanding that the 285 is just a die-shrunk 280... of course I'm noob and might be missing other points of distinction.

I would also like to know which will be better overall and better value: single 295 or dual 285.
 
die shrunk and faster in everything you can overclock in... small die means less power consumption and just able to produce more...

GTX 295 - $500

one gtx 285 requires 550W PSU, one GTX 295 requires 680W...
gotta take into consideration the difference between an SLI and a regular pci x motherboard and power requirements are almost the same...

GTX 295 beats 2xgtx260's but slightly slower than 2xgtx280's...
two 285 will be a significant difference compared to one gtx 295 but the question is $800 for two gtx 285 or $500 for gtx 295...

I personally would tell anyone to spend $100 more for the gtx 295 because it's simply the fastest single slot card out there now...

two of these will give you the fastest vantage scores out...

but comparing the value of 2xgtx285 vs gtx 295...

I don't think its worth the extra $300 plus extra motherboard costs for SLI...

 
New to this forum, but I run 2 GTX 285's (BFG's----they come OC'ed 666 core clocks) and to me they are probably overkill for 98% of games...even with one I was playing Crysis and Crysis Warhead with Very High and Enthusiast settings and 4xAA, now I am playing with 16xAA (not needed as 8xAA is plenty)...but truly it is cool to see both running great and no issue with microstuttering (which I had with dual 8800 Gt's). Now, I would never go back to one as I like the power of 2 and knowing that as games progress in the future that I have no worries that my system can't handle it.

BFG just came out with a good 1200W PSU. better VS this ULTRA ...

Your better to go with SSD vs VR. youll have less storage .. but use a 1TB for storage and 2 SSD raid-0

You dont really ned teh EXTREME .. but its as you wish !
 
After reading reviews on the SSD, Im not willing to pay the amount wanted per gig. Not for the minimal performance increase... I think I will stay with my 3 VR's in a RAID 0 (btw I hope I was right to go with that $300 raid card vs using on board). I almost bought the 3X 1600W solution... but my wife had a hart attack when I told her I was gonna have the local electrician come out to set it on it's own circuit (yes it is easy to do, and no i will not do that my self.)
As soon as Newegg gets some of the 2TB WD sata drives in stock, I wlll order 2 or 3 of those for storage.... but those will be hooked up to the on board system raid controller.... non raid.
 
Why not just go all out and get EVGA FTW GTX 285's? If your not planning to overclock beyond stock at least your factory overclock will be the highest possible. If you are planning on overclocking them not sure if SSC's are necessary as my card runs well over SSC speeds just fine and its the base EVGA 285. Just a thought =/
 
Probably a bit late on the response here, but Crysis, Far Cry 2, Call of Duty 4 and 5, World of Warcraft, and Unreal 3 all work just fine with a single GTX 285 OC 1 gig DDR3. I play all of those games quite often and have had no problems whatsoever. I'm sure framerate and bell-and-whistles would be better with SLi, but it's really unnecessary right now. By the time a game comes out that really requires 2x 285's then there will be better cards for the same price or maybe a little more.

GTX 295 = 2x GTX 275

Granted GTX 275 wasn't out when you posted your message, but it is a GTX 285 GPU with the memory interface from a GTX 260.
 
drop the processor.. get core i7 920 d0 stepping, overclock until 4.2Ghz (achievable). cash saved, spend on another gtx 285.. Tri SLI.. Isnt that cool? games are always about graphic cards.. not processor.

All about GPu ? not about CPU ? GAMES ? your out of the track. Lots of most recent games are very CPU intensive. You can take GTA4 that is the most CPU needing game ATM. I get 55% avg use of my 3.74ghz Q9550 when playing. This mean sometimes over 70% on all core.

I agree that without a GOOD gpu you cant game at Hi-res/Hi-detail but you need a good CPU too.

Its a combination of hardware.

i think Ci7 920 is a good cpu after all. and with the money he saved from buying 965extreme, he can get another GPU.

so its a good CPU and good GPU.

Oc'ed 920 paired with 3 GTX285 can beat Oc'ed 965 paired with 2 GTX295

and i agree with this.

BEST would be a SLI GTX285 with an OCed I7 920 ( like 4.0+ ). NO need of a 3sli ! the price of the 3rd card can be spend on a good WC kit.
