GTX 460SE SC VS HD 5850

Hello all,

I looked at alot of benchmarks and the GTX 460 SE GPU seems to be about 5 % less then my HD 5850 ( would this be a safe to say ? )

I can off load my HD 5850 for the same price i can get a GTX 460 SE SC http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130597 ( now with the OC on this card it should be about on par with my HD 5850 no ? < Question.

I am also thinking in about 6 to 8 months, maybe pick up another GTX 460 for maybe 100 bucks ( i am hopping ) to SLI

Long as i can do 40 to 60 FPS in games its good for me, I play at 1920x1080 rez

Crysis ( only for testing FPS ) < really not a fun game for me :)

What do you guys think ? i hope it wont be going backwards to much, I am just not loving my HD 5850 ( my GTX 260 just seemed to play games smoother ( yes the HD 5850 gave more FPS but seemed like the GTX played better.

( EDIT ) or you think a GTX 470 for 100 bucks more ? for a 5 to 7 % over a HD 5850 ? IMO not really worth it me thinks

i dont really see the point in this kind of "upgrade". If your going to upgrade from a 5850 do it properly or you will just end up with a different card that plays games the same as what you already had, seems like a waste of time and effort to me. Why not get another 5850 and crossfire??? or if you really want to ditch the 5850 and get something else that can be crossfire in the future try the 6850 http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/Radeon_HD_6850_CrossFire/10.html

I was looking at that exact card. What put me off, and this is backed up by no data what so ever, is the SE has 48 cores less the other 460s. I haven't looked at any tests to see if there is a difference good or bad, but soemthing to look at.

I really want to go with nvidia ( my MOBO will xfire or SLI ) i dont need to stay with a ATI GPU, Thats really the whole point of it. I am not really looking to get more FPS @ 1080 then i get with my HD 5850, but a Nvidia card that would be on par with my HD 5850 FPS wise, and not cost to much more then the 150 i can get for this HD 5850 i have.

I just get alot of driver not responding BS with ATIs drivers. Not that the card dont do the job.

If i was looking to upgrade i would just buy a GTX 570

I got a GTX 460 and even the original driver is rock solid for me well not all that original just 258.96 and overclocking is ware it shines. As for upgrading a GTX570 is right but don't look at the GTX460 as one unless your main focus is stable drivers which is Nvidia's strong suits.

IYO would you say http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130567 would gave about the same FPS as a HD 5850 ?

It is still a good card but don't expect it to be on par on all games till you overclock then you are going to have some fun. That is what they are good for when you push them to 850 and higher. For physx games are going to be much faster depending on the game in question and plus the card can be used for video encoding if you are into such editing.

That one is OCed @ 763/1526 My HD 5850 is clocking up @ 775/1100 in games 🙁

You'll want at least a GTX 460 1gb(not SE) with a healthy OC to get something comparable to your HD5850. If you are in the US and your budget is $230 you can afford a GTX 470 however. With the promo code this one is $229 and just $199 after the mail in rebate;

Otherwise look for a GTX 460 1gb with good cooling and overclock it. The MSI Hawk or the Asus DirectCU would be the best choices;

If you are lucky to get a decent sample 850 should be expected and the one in ten thousand will crack 1ghz if pampered right. I know a mod that will help boost just about any Fermi card by a small margin that allows for higher clocks but it is a hard mod but then again seeing post mod screen shots of GTX480s topping out around 900mhz core, I know I know just adding info. A GTX 460 or a GTX470 will be a welcomed addition to your machine but picking the right card is what counts. The value isn't always in the stock cooler but the pcb. As for your 5850 not every pick is a good one and I am no stranger to that as a avid collector of cards. Some do fantastic while others leave one wanting.

A 850 mhz GTX460 is around the performance of a GTX470 give or take 5% and if you are able to hit 900mhz then it will be close to the 5870 range give or take about 5-10% depending on the game and drivers.

For the record, theres absolutely nothing wrong with a 460SE, yes it has a few less cores then a normal 460 but its still about on par with them.

I got mine about a week ago, this is what i got it on so far.

Idle temp: 27-28C
Max Load: Up to 65C on BFBC2 Max settings. All other games Load temp is lower. Fan at default 40%

There is nothing wrong with the GTX460SE except it is slower than the other GTX460 cards, it is still a good card for the money.

The SE card has 1GB of memory for those on a budget playing with high resolutions. If you are not on a higher resolution monitor, consider a GTX460 768MB version.

There are THREE versions of the GTX 460.

GTX 460 1GB has 336 Shaders & 32 ROPs with Core Clock of 675Mhz (900Mhz Memory Clock @ 256bit)

GTX 460 768MB has 336 Shaders & 24 ROPs with Core Clock of 675Mhz (900Mhz Memory Clock@ 192bit)

GTX 460 SE has 228 Shaders & 32 ROPs with Core Clock of 648Mhz (850Mhz Memory Clock @ 256bit)

The 1GB version is the fastest, has the most processing units, and more RAM obviously.

EDIT: And if you look @ matto's chart you'll see there are less texture units on the SE version as well. :) Not to mention 1 less polymorph engine.

The 1GB version is of course better then a 768MB version.

If you look at the above chart theres not really all that much of a performance difference, especially when you overclock it.

i have the 1GB version and it pwns.

According to that chart the SE seems to be a hybrid between a normal 460 and a 465, or there abouts anyway.

either way you look at it though, its not much weaker then a normal 460

and my SE has 288 cores, not 228, big difference.
