Recently upgraded from an 8800GTX and it's barely an improvement. BF3 is tearing me a new one. All AA off, mixture of medium/low settings and I average 30fps but often dip, sometimes as low as 16fps. Frustrating.

1680x1050
EVGA GTX 560 SC
Phenom II X2 3.2Ghz
4GB DDR2 800
520W no-name PSU

The only thing I can think of is that the PSU is inadequate, but I'm 70W over the 450W minimum...thoughts?

Have you gone into your bios and tried the core unlocker? What speed is your CPU overclocked to? You're in the perfect situation for learning how to overclock now as it can actually provide a tangible benefit for you. There's around a 50% chance you can get a quad core running at 3.6GHz if you unlock and OC--so look into it.

Also, if you upgrade to a Phenom II x4--go for the Phenom II 960 Zosma (Black Edition) because it's pretty much the same price as the 955BE with similar stock...
More googling of my board pointed to a thread on overclock.net that says that temp is mosfet.

The guy came to the conclusion that the readings are bugged.

In any case, nothing feels warm to the touch. Not even close.

No, through this thread I've come to the conclusion that performance issues are the CPU bottlenecking.
The performance did improve a bit after I changed the PSU.
The possible overheating was a sidetrack and now this thread is all over the place 😛
Not that I'm 100% certain something isn't overheating, but it sure seems like it's not.

Edit: seems like the AS5 MIGHT have dropped that reading by a few degrees after all.

If the Zosma that dalauder mentioned were in stock, I'd be severely tempted to pull the trigger on it right this minute.

Sorry, I was MIA for a while.

The AS5 will continue to drop temps your first 100 hours of usage.

The 32C/17C you quoted sounds pretty close to the 28C/20C in HWMonitor. It's very possible that those temps are from the same sensor. I'd try dropping or upping the CPU clock and fan settings (to artificially make the CPU get hotter or cooler) and see if the HWMonitor readings vary with the bios readings.

Let us know how that unlocking goes. A Quad Core unlock may solve your performance issues. If you do start a new thread on unlocking/overclocking (as this one will close soon after a "Best Answer"), try to link it here if you can. If you can't feel free to PM me.

3.0ghz quad core with a 6mb L3cache.
I would get it! I have 6mb of L3 cache - it's good for gaming!

I will continue to test and monitor. Much appreciated.

Will continue to post when I unlock. I will say though the 965 X4 3.4 is $115 with a promo through 11/14 right now...super tempted.
