GTX 770 2 Way SLI or GTX 780TI

Solution
If you only have a 1080p monitor, a GTX 770 2GB has enough power to cap 60 FPS in pretty much any game right now. If your 1080p display is a 3D/120Hz/144Hz, you can get more than 60 FPS out of it with a 780 or 780Ti.

So if you are planning to stay with a single 1080p 60Hz display, a single GTX 770 2GB card will be just fine for a couple years. I plan on keeping mine for two years, minimum.
1920 x 1080, just the one GTX770 is enough. GTX780 would be a little better, no need to go 780Ti.

2560x1440 I would say the 780Ti would be a good choice. For 3840 x 2160 (4K) a pair of 780Ti

Eyefinity and Surround display setups, again the pair of 780 or 780 Ti.

Depends on your plans for the future.

There are good reasons for both sides. The SLI 770's will outperform the 780ti except for when you play a game that isn't well optimized for SLi. SLi does scale very well on Nvidia cards. I used to have GTX 470's in SLI and my only real issue with it performance wise was that there wasn't much vRAM. If you SLI GTX 770's together then I suggest the 4GB cards especially if you plan to keep them for 3 to 5 years or longer. The GTX 780ti is the best option though in my opinion. It doesn't put out as much heat as SLI'd cards do and you can sli it later when prices fall. GTX 780ti is simply more than you probably even need out of a card.

for 1920x1080p, true you don't need more than a single GTX 770 to max out a game @ 60FPS. My 780Ti recommendation primarily comes from your Adobe editing tools and my opinion that a single GPU is always easier ownership as far as game compatibility, support and heat generation within your rig.

Also, to add to the VRAM conversation.... reviews are showing the GTX 770 4GB cards aren't really using the extra 2GB of VRAM, compared to the 2GB version, until you get to UHD resolutions(5760x1080) and even then, the little performance that is squeaked out isn't worth the cost of the second GTX 770 4GB. The 4GB GTX 770 is a gimmick card in a 1080p environment. The GTX 780Ti would be the better buy or, a single GTX 770 2GB.

The GTX 690 is a dual GPU that gets on average 8-10 more FPS with more than twice the heat generation. The 780Ti is a single GPU.

(2) GTX 770's in SLI would just barely outperform a single GTX 780Ti and would quickly lose that battle as soon as you needed more VRAM

We're talking about dual gpu's vs the 780ti. The GTX 690 is like two 680's in sli. I was using it as an example that if SLI 680's can beat a 780 ti then surely sli GTX 770's can beat it by a bit more.

How much power would I need to run two 780ti's In the future? and thanks for the graphs they really helped :)

I think you're wrong friend. Do some research. First of all, a 690 is a dual gpu which makes it more power hungry and would be some 5-10% faster than the 780Ti which is not worth the price. And for the two 770's in SLI, their performance would be equivalent to a gtx780 and not faster than a 780Ti which in turn is fdater than the 780 by 30%(approx.)

Are you sure that SLI GTX 770's are equal to a single GTX 780?

I would say at least an 850W but you might want to look at those 1000W SuperNova's.

Thanks for all you help :) which would be better suited for gaming only 780 or 780ti

Either one is going to probably be more powerful than necessary to get the job done. I have a single GTX 770 and it games very well. If you want to stay at 1080P just get a single GTX 770 and sli later if you need to. If you want higher resolutions the GTX 780 or the 780 ti will work fine. I honestly can't see any difference in 1080p and a little AA vs 1440p. If you definitely want higher resolutions then save yourself a couple hundred dollars and get a GTX 780. For just 1080p get the GTX 770 and save even more money.

Blah, blah, blah benchmarks mean didly squat. It all depends on OP's mobo. If he has a mediocre mobo that only supports x16/x4 then he's better off with a single gpu, if he has x8/x8 then sli. A 770 won't fill x8, but it will fill x4, robbing the second gpu of performance. Also OP may be using a PCIe x1 in which case that shares bandwidth with the x4 slot by default is x2. Make that into x4 and it kills the x1 slot. Depends on mobo.

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z97gaming5 that's my mobo if you want anything else just ask :)

That MB wouldn't give u a minute to think that it can SLI in x8/x8 mode.
As i said earlier the 290 would be worth the money. But if are leaning towards nvidia, then get a 770. That would run nearly all games at 60fps.
If u have the money and a big monitor with refresh rate greater than 60hz, the get a 780Ti and you can play all games on ultra. But the 290 is more worth the money.

Blah, Blah blah... your motherboard is fine for whatever option you go with.

What do you mean when you say x8/x8?
