Considering buying gtx 780 for a 1080p HDTV. Is that a dumb move it's my first build hooking up to samsung tv. It's a 50 inch led dlp tv. 120 hz. Has hdmi, dvi. Looking to not upgrade for 3-5 and still want to max out graphics and framrate.
I7 4770k processor. I will buy a 4k tv when they are reasonable. Thanks much. Thinking maybe r9 290 as well. Pc will strictly be for gaming 89 series mobo pc 2600 ram etc etc. I want to play Arma 3, Rust, Dayz, Bioshock infinite, Modded Skyrim, Infinte Crisis, League of Legends, The Witcher 3, The Division, and Evolve. Will there be a big jump in graphics/gameplay coming from a PS4? I want to play 1080p ultra with everything turned up

Yeah that TV can only display 60 frames, the 120hz is a marketing thing called frame interpolation to actually see and benefit from 120 fps you would need a 120hz monitor that is actually capable of taking in a 120hz signal.

That being said, for 1080p at 60hz I think a GTX 780 is a really good choice. A 770 would be good too, but if you can afford the 780 get it since it will last longer.

How far away will you be from the TV? Hopefully far since it's 50", sitting close to it will look bad. I also generally recommend a monitor for PC gaming, as a lot of TV's have input lag and aren't suited for fast paced gaming. I would consider a monitor if I was you, you could even get a GTX 770 and with the amount you save buy a decent monitor...

As for the 290, Nvidia cards are typically better at 1080p while AMD is better for higher resolution, so I would stick with Nvidia.

If you haven't bought the PC or parts yet don't get 2600mhz RAM, the highest you should go is 1866mhz, and 1600mhz is fine too. Any higher just cost more with no performance increase.

If you're trying to get a much better experience than the PS4, the GTX 780 will be great. It'll hold 1080p 60 fps in every game, on ultra settings.

The PS4 generally does 900p/60fps or 1080p/30fps at high settings, not ultra. The GTX 780 is like twice as powerful as a PS4's graphics card.

Just don't run at 120 fps; I guess your TV only supports 60 anyway, but 120 fps is really not worth it at all.
