Got my MSI GTX 970 4G on Monday install it straight away no problems. When I placed my pc onto the desk I could hear a noise coming from my graphic card only when gaming. At the intro of Far Cry 4 the noise gets louder and when in game gets lower. Anyway Monday I'll send the card back for a new one. I did some search on forums and found out that the coil whine could be caused by the quality of the PSU, I 've got the CX750M.
What do you guys think should I still go with MSI and change the PSU to SeaSonic 650W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified and see what happens or just get the ASUS STRIX.

My 970 does work right. I limit it so I don't put unneeded stress on the system. A constant 60 Hz (matching my monitors refresh rate) with no tearing is exactly what I want, so I run games as close to maximum as I can (some games at maximum), I don't get huge dips in framerate and I don't put that additional stress on the system that is of little to no benefit to me.

Each to their own.

I've been reading about how some people play games at 4k resolutions and framerates below 30 Hz. That is simply not acceptable to me. Everyone is different.

😉

how is MSI crap can you please tell me how there products are "Crap"

it not working to his satisfaction is it ?? then its crap that's all there I to it - make them replace it with one that works correctly right out of the box .. the way it should be .. nothing wrong with the msi cards I think there the card that get the least amount of bad reviews and reported issues , but there still some that do , but if I get one that's got issues its crap and going back for one that's not ..

look at the 970overall its got issues across the board if you get one that's a issue card [any brand ] it needs to go back coil whine would be a instant rma for me I never had a card to do so and I don't expect to get one that does -- defect part as you can read here so you eather get a card with the good coils or a card with not so good and that's part of why some card do and some do not -- this is why you should rma the card or just live with the substandard one you got and use ear plugs

I did not build this nice quite computer to stick something like that in it or to have performance and just to find I have to cut its nutts to make it work right I expect to get a card that works as expected issue free with in it means right out of the box .. nothing less or its returned
good luck

MSI makes amazing GPU'S ive had MSI to test and evga 970 to test and theres more coil whine from the EVGA version

maybe and I will agree to that but also the new evga cards [rev 3 ] got the new generation 2 parts in them now -- as I showed above -- evga is evolving there cards wile the rest is still with there first ones [ not to say it all better as of no reviews of the new evga cards yet] but it seems evga took a step to try to resolve there issues with new /better ?? parts and a redesigned card

bottom line is there should be no coil whine at all no matter what brand

i agree with that

Now guys just an update, I received my new graphic card EVGA GTX 970 FTW and all I can say I'm very disappointed the coil whine its even worse than the MSI and there is also this image shuttering. I'm really tired of having this problems with this cards. I'm gonna try with another PSU later on maybe there are some issues with my CX750M. If the card its broken I'll send it back and try my luck with one of the 960's

is your mobo heating up? the problem can be cause by heating mobo

No its not heating up mobo temp 27C or 80F

Is anyone experiencing this problem also hearing the coil whine through the speakers as well when playing a game?

I have asus z97 pro mobo and asus gtx 970 gpu. Sounds like most people are just having coil whine. I'd like to try a better PSU (currently thermaltake gold 650w) like EVGA gold 750.

you cant do anything about it honestly usually vsync will help but i guess its not helping you, have you tried forcing vsync?

'' I received my new graphic card EVGA GTX 970 FTW and all I can say I'm very disappointed the coil whine ''

is it the old or the new ftw + ??? I was just with a guy hat got the newer one and said it had whine .. also I see around that the ftw seems bad to still have this issue now or old , but the new ssc+ don't get reports of whine as it big brother and its got more reviews on it over the ftw+

in the end it just seems like the gtx970 is a flop / buyer beware card no matter what brand it is .. like the coil whine , way too common way too many cards .. it has to be a design flaw or a substandard/ poorly spec'ed part used .. I can understand a few with it but its like near every one with a few without it... [opinion]

newegg reviews shows 29 5 egg reviews for the ssc+ [ 04G-P4-3975-KR ] but theres not any today to read ?????

Mine is FTW only, I don't know what to think anymore, like I said if it's not my PSU the faulty one I'm gonna send it back and get the 960 or the EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked 4Gb (which is more expensive btw), I'm so sick of this, there should be some authority to ban this cards something like consumer rights or something

not many gtx 700cards in stock these days I guess there phasing them out for the 900 cards and maybe do to this from a review site [anandtech]

Furthermore, as we mentioned in our GTX 980 review, GTX 970 has been a pure virtual (no reference card) launch, which means all of NVIDIA’s partners are launching their custom cards right out of the gate. A lot of these have been recycled or otherwise only slightly modified GTX 700/600 series designs

Hi guys just an update I've changed the PSU (Corsasir CX750M) with another brand ( don't know what brand but still 80 bronze certified) now the coil whine is not bad and very acceptable I have also left Heaven Benchmark 4.0 running overnight. I've sent an email to EVGA support team to ask them if I get an 80+ gold PSU the coil whine will disappear completely or would be the same, so I'm waiting for a reply.

Anyway I decided to keep the card, hope the coil whine will disappear completely after a while

Regarding coil whine, one of the EVGA support member replayed:

" We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused. The issue you're describing is commonly referred to as coil whine. First, it should be noted that coil whine is not an indication of failure of any kind. In fact, it's relatively common among high powered electronics, but is normally generated at a frequency that most human beings cannot hear it. There are a few things that can contribute to the noise, and we can make a couple of suggestions that may help pinpoint the source of the noise and potentially lessen or eliminate the noise.

First, we recommend testing your video card with a different power supply, as the power supply can be a major factor in how intense the noise is. If the PSU is feeding fluctuating power to the card, it can cause the coils to vibrate, causing coil whine.

Second, you could try a burn-in test with a benchmark program such as Unigine Valley or EVGAs OC Scanner X. Burn-in testing with those programs should last for at least 4 hours, and going as long as 8 hours, if not overnight. This can often help the coil settle in and reduce the intensity of the noise, if not eliminate it completely. The catch is that this can be a temporary solution, so further testing may be necessary after the burn-in to make sure it's either at an acceptable level or gone completely.

If you still find that the noise is unbearable, we can assist with an RMA. Just let us know.

Regards,
EVGA"

I guess that's why in 14 years of cards I never experienced it ?? so I guess that all my cards were abnormal ???? come on guys get real

no need to make excuses for a bad card -- its like you bought a new car with the motor knocking and folks comment on that and you start to defend the buy saying it normal ????

get real

You need to get real, rather than spouting off useless nonsense (most of your posts).

I have heard coil whine with computers and electronics for the last 20+ years, some times its more perceivable than others, sometimes it is masked by other noises (loud fans, HDDs etc). Also, some people simply cant hear the frequency range that it happens, hence them believing they don't have it (or have never heard it). CRT televisions used to be terrible for it.

nonsense ?? wow - I guess your easy to please and if you find it expectable to you and for the money you paid .. that's like I say I don't build a nice quite rig just to have something like that in it ... maybe you enjoy that ??? and as said if it normal why all the complaints over it ?? at least all the ones that come in for these cards over others..

ya you do hear one or 2 complaints from cards but not near every other one like from the 970 ..

seems like you own this card and now got to defend it as well [lol]
