Got my MSI GTX 970 4G on Monday install it straight away no problems. When I placed my pc onto the desk I could hear a noise coming from my graphic card only when gaming. At the intro of Far Cry 4 the noise gets louder and when in game gets lower. Anyway Monday I'll send the card back for a new one. I did some search on forums and found out that the coil whine could be caused by the quality of the PSU, I 've got the CX750M.
What do you guys think should I still go with MSI and change the PSU to SeaSonic 650W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified and see what happens or just get the ASUS STRIX.

Are you simple?

No I don't have a 970, my current card doesn't suffer from coil whine. But I understand why it happens, and why the 970 is particularly prone to it.

me too -- and why I would not risk my money on one anybody who can read all the info in it and then buy one thinking there immune and the comes here with there complaints or issues deserves it own it and I don't fell sorry for them one bit ..

just like whats said here on this to me seems like a bad spec'ed part -substandard part used .. when a part cant do the intended job its just bad how else can I look at that ?? not wraped right ?? not insulated right ? under spec'ed ?? I got better things to spend on and only would expect this from a low tiered card super discounted .. and then like anandtech reported how the 970 is using leftover salvaged parts from the 700 cards ?? that maybe part of the issue in its self ...

anyway for what I read on this card I could not see paying my good money on one , but that's just me

Could that not be attributed to the fact that the 970 is a very popular card? More people using it meaning more potential for issues being reported?

It could also be that some people can hear coil whine only when they get into a much closer proximity to the card than they would while using the PC, so it wouldn't actually be an issue but some people who demand perfection won't accept any coil whine at all.

Of course, it could also be that many of the cards have significant coil whine due to quality issues.

All of the above perhaps?

I'm still very happy with the performance of my MSI GTX 970. Just feeling a bit ripped off having paid for the full 4GB of VRAM but only getting 3.5GB.

Exactly, its mainly due to the following factors:

1) Popularity of the 970
2) Higher clock speed than pretty much any other graphics card

Btw, read up more on the vram "issue". You do have the full 4gb, its just different how the card uses the final 0.5gb - in games, it makes very little performance difference even when using the full 4gb vram.

Anyway, i have a gtx 970 and didn't know they had coil problems.

They didn't sound loud like the ASUS Stryx GTX 970.

Btw, most of GTX 970 had new programs like, if u are used more of your graphcard the fans will work harder in asus its DirectCU if im not wrong.

all Nvidea 900s have noticable coil whine. And the coil whine is always the same volume. I've tested cards: 3x970, 1x 980 and 1 960. And they all had this noticable coil whine. And they do it all the same, there's no "luck card" that has less coil whine. They do it all the same way. It's just that there is so many stupid people in this world who can't perceive the obvious.

This is false and a blanket statement.... I have 2 970s (evga ftw both of them). One has much worse coil whine than the other... My gf 960 has nearly no coil whine at all.... To say they all do the same is not correct. Then you go and say ppl are stupid... Lol
