Hello! I have a problem overclocking the GTX 970 G1.I raised the core clock with +150 and the memory clock with +200 and left the stock voltages. I ran FURMARK with no issue and also VALLEY BENCHMARK. When I tried to play Crysis 3 or BF4(only games I tried) I got a crash. It was something like a coloured screen and then an error message. What to do? Thank you!

Solution
Try 125 Core. I run 125 core and 500 memory. Anything past 130 core makes it unstable for me.

I have the G1 too. Remember that the card is factory overclocked and aside from the FTW edition has the highest factory overclock, so you will get less of an OC because it's already partially there.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!
I overclocked my G1 gtx 970 the same way you did, using MSI afterburner, and when I tried to run Far Cry 4, it crashed after a few minutes of gameplay (I got a colored screen and the game was not responding anymore).

My PC : Gigabyte GTX 970 G1
Windows 8.1 64 bit

This is very weird, because this is a light overclock ! Does this have something to do with the new Nvdia drivers (347.52) ?

My PSU is : XFX 550W 80+ Gold (its a good quality PSU, dont think thats the problem)
Maybe we need to put the Powel Limit to 110, instead of the stock value 100.

I hope someone more experienced can give us a solution for this. :)

UPDATE :

I tried to lower my overclock. I put the core clock to +147 Mhz and memory clock +194 Mhz, Power limit to 110 ! And its still unstable, got a crash while playing Far Cry 4 (a coloured screen and after that, the game wasn`t responding). I`m desperate! I know that this card can achieve much higher overclocks, but yet, I have a light overclock and its crashing on me!

Is my GPU faulty ?

You didnt answer anybodys question. I have seen peple with the aforementioned card with much higher overclocks (+160 core, +500 mhz ram) and stable. Should I use another overclocking program ?
And what about Power limit setting, at what value should I put it ?

That does not mean that all the cards reach the same overclock is all I am saying and if the card is having same issue at std clocks it is simply faulty!

Well, at standard (stock) clocks, I dont get any issues or crashes.

Then either you got unlucky with the card (bad OC) or you need to do more tweaking.

Is your overclock stable in games (like FC4, BF4, AC 4 etc.) ?
Anyway, thank you, I will try your settings.

btw. Tell me, what`s your BIOS version and your DRIVER version ?
You can find this information in Gigabyte OC Guru II app.

@Dorin Filimon, I dont want to raise the voltages, its okay as it is (the gpu is strong without an overclock, I just hope it will be good for GTA V). I have rev, 1.0

BIOS version F1
Driver 9.18.13.4752

O/C is very stable. Stress tested all night, ran through four benchmarks and played FC4 for two hours. After that I played War Thunder all night with it.

Weird! Did you try upping the power limit and voltage? Is your fan at 100?

Yes, my Power limit is always at 112 %, I didn`t touch the voltage (but even at stock voltage I should get a stable overclock, but I ain`t getting it). In MSI afterburner, my Fan is on auto (I didn`t change anything here)...

It is weird, I only get these colored screens (crashes) in games after some gameplay (10-15 minutes). When I run a stress test, Furmark or heaven, its stable and I get no crashes.
I have Windows 8.1 Pro, newest Nvidia drivers and the GPU is performing good, except for the overclocking part :/

I tried even EVGA overclocker tool, and nothing, I also get crashes.
I think Fan speed doesnt have nothing to do with this (my temps are okay).
Why cant I get a stable overclock on stock voltage (+100 core and +100 memory) ??

I also have a G1 Gaming 970 gtx , you have to check your GPU overclocking potential . I've seen a lot of people overcloking this GPU at 150+ and 500+ memory but it doesnt work for me .. i have a V850 Cooler Master PSU so there is no issue with power .. It worked for me only with 140+ / 390+ .. thats the maximum it can go for me .. so you have to try different settings.. but start lowering you clock first to 140 or 130 ...you can raise the memory to 350 ..

If you have a 550w psu I don't think that will be enough. I also have to gtx970 g1 gaming and I remember it saying on the back of the box that minimum watts is 550. So I am guessing you may not have enough power
