My computer randomly turns off while playing some games. I think it's a case of my PC overheating.

Specs:
GPU: EVGA GTX 970
CPU: i7 4771
RAM: 8gb
HDD: 1tb
PSU: 850W Corsair

I recently installed my 970 into my Computer, booted fine, installed the drivers and started to test framerates on games. I first played 2 games of Battlefield 4 and it ran like a dream. Then I started to play Arma 2: DayZ and that's where I first noticed the issue. I started playing for around 20-30 minutes and then my computer shut off. I thought my power may have went out while I wasn't paying attention, due to the storms in my area. I thought nothing of it and continued playing after my computer booted. 15 minutes later it goes out again, another 15 minutes pass by and it goes off again.
OP has same issue. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2404255/issues-geforce-gtx-970.html

Solution

i would just buy a new Heatsink all together with some high qaulity thermal paste.
Here is a good Heatsink...

I'll try, but it runs fine on other games, I just took a 15 minute session on Far Cry 4. But I'll give it a go.

I dont think the Graphics Card is the problem as the computer shouldnt turn off if it overheats. So i got a couple of questions, please answer them for me to help you.
1. Have you checked your CPU Temps?
2. Are you using thermal paste on your CPU?
3. Has this just started happening?
4. Are you using Stock Heatsink?
5. Have you considered it may be your PSU failing?

I just checked my temperatures, and the GPU was fine, however the CPU was running at 90-100c on Arma 2, which is more of a CPU intensive game, that's why I think it's something to do with my CPU running way too hot now, while playing a more CPU intensive game.

1. Yes, they don't seem too good on my CPU.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. I doubt it would be my PSU, but sure it could be a possibility.

I also checked all fans are going, and they're working as intended.

Edit: Here are my idle temperatures. http://i.imgur.com/Evixolo.png

Edit 2: I have a question for you. Do you think I should try cleaning out the stock CPU fan to see if there's any dust that may be keeping it warm?

Honestly i think its your CPU. I remember mine did the same thing a while back. My computer kept turning off during games. Then I started monitoring CPU temps in games and they reached 80 celsius. So my conclusion, if you have Thermal paste on the CPU and the temps are like that, your heatsink isn't do so well i would suggest you consider buying a good Heatsink. And to answer your question i would try dusting the heatsink out and reapply fresh Thermal paste.

I'll look into that, do you think reapplying new thermal paste would help, or just go for a new heatsink?
I don't have any thermal paste handy right now. I'd have to order some. Do you know of any shops that might sell some?

Here is a good Heatsink: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4DA1WK1545&cm_re=Cooler_Master_Hyper_212_Evo-_-35-103-099-_-Product (Dont mind the price its just newegg is out of stock at the moment and using a different seller to sell them, its $34.99)
Heres the some High quality thermal paste that i use: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007

Solution
your cpu has a Thermal limit of 105C it wont shut off unless it gets to 95+C

actually it will throttle b4 it even gets that hot so i don't think it is your CPU overheating as long as it is under 82C under heavy load your fine cpu wise

so it might be your psu but i would doubt it it is a high quality after all ..

Actually no my CPU hit 80 and shut off. 92 would probably be the state of destroying itself.

Thanks man, I'll look into getting the thermal paste and fan. I was hoping to spend the rest of my Christmas money on a new game or something. Guess that will have to wait 😛

If you got money left over that steam sale is luring me in like siren.
