Gtx680 to tv

I have 2 PNY GForce GTX 680 2G cards in SLI on a 3.4 MHZ Alienware system with 16 Mb Ram @1600 MHZ.
My problem is when my monitor is hooked up to the DVI port of one card and I try to use the HDMI out of the same card to run a duplicate screen (for slideshows) to my 27" flatscreen in another room the monitor screen goes to a muted color no display, until I unplug the HDMI output.
What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried using a HDMI port on the other card?

Yes, no difference.

That is odd, even the GT220 in my mothers PC allows the use of DVI and HDMI at the same time.
