for some strange reason my messenger seems to be logging
out by itself repeatedly and i am getting the impression
that i am being hacked as i have checked for spyware and
viruses. Is there anyway to prevent this or to find out
what is causing the problem?

What do your firewall logs say? If you don't have a third-party
firewall, get one. Sygate and ZoneAlarm make good personal firewalls
that are free. Install the firewall and if you have Service Pack 2,
disable the Windows Firewall from its applet in Control Panel. Now
watch the activity on the new firewall and when you have some
information about what programs are trying to access the Internet, post
back with the details for more help.
