Please can you help me, I can no longer play half life on the internet. Every game and mods does not work. It will connect to the 'WON' bit, but refuses to connect to the server after 4 tries. This is driving me insane, could it be I've recently installed CS 1.4?

My OS is XP pro
Half life is patched to latest, inc TFC 1.5 and DMC 1.0
CS is 1.4
ISP is ahem, AOL on a 56k dialup
I also have gamespyarcade 1.09 installed too, and Command & Conquerer R. demo works fine over the internet.

Thanks in advance

Did you actually buy the game or did you steal a CD-key? Because there is a good possibility that your cd-key has been banned from the networks. That or you were caught cheating with the new steam servers.

Thanks you all for your quick reply, am afraid my Half life is legit, and I hate anyone who cheats when playing multiplayers. GOD mode is fine when playing single player ^_^

I've just reinstalled HL & patched to the latest version, didn't put CS 1.4 on top. Same thing happened :-(

I am going to try and reinstall AOL 7.0 tonight and see is it anything to do the TCP/IP stack.

Do anyone have any other suggestion?

He wouldn't have gotten past the WON check if his CDkey was in use or banned.
It sounds like you are trying to connect to a specific server. Most likely that server doesnt have the same version of the mod you are using, since you just upgraded. Pay attention to the message you get in the console when it fails to connect and let us know what it says. And try connecting to other servers.

Thank you for the post, tried reinstall AOL over the weekend... no luck. What happened was it connects to the won server okay, then tries to connect to the game server e.g ****.***.**.*:***** after 3 or 4 tries it fails to connect. Sometimes it connects after the 4th try, but NOTHING happens. Just dead screen.

Where is the config file that I can 'tweak' the settings?

Thanks for the help.

Upon further thought, I have just realized that I had this problem too. My setup was the same as yours, with XP Pro and CS 1.4

Recently I disconnected from my University LAN and started using AOL again for my net access. I was annoyed with the littled 'disconnected from network' icon in my task bar, so I removed my network settings for the LAN. This caused my CS to stop working. Similar to yours, though I was not even able to get a server listing, and manually typing in server IPs only caused a timeout. I have no idea why this is, but I reverted my PC back to before I uninstalled the LAN network settings and everything worked again. But as far as I can tell, it is definitely something to do with the fact we were using AOL and we have dynamic IPs...

Hello all, phoned AOL technical last night and they don't know anything about it. I guess it's time to move on to a real ISP ^_^

It's awfully popular to bash AOL isn't it? Internet development would not be where it is today if AOL had not managed to attract so many new users to the net. If you could explain how it is 'the worst thing to ever happen to the internet', I'd be very interested to hear it.

i think he was just refering to all the security holes, the compressed graphics to save their bandwidth, the lack of network support(ics), not being able to use outlook as default email, and many things that you can do with other isps. i was on aol for a few years ind didnt hate it until the end when i found out what i was missing, although i dont know if it is the "worst" thing to ever happen to the internet..... popups suck pretty bad.....

....the birds seemed to be calling him, thought caw....

There is nothing wrong with AOL, I always recommend AOL to any newbie out there because it is so easy to use and the help line is a free phone number. The biggest failing AOL having now is they don't support internet sharing, even with their broadband package! Right now they (AOL) are having meetings in their cupboards discussing why their broadband is not taking off ^_^ idiots!

Actually I figured out what was wrong with my end of the connection, maybe it's the same for you. What I realized was that my ZoneAlarm Pro firewall was starting up in the background even though I didn't authorize it. So what I needed to do was to 'turn it on' and then manually turn it off again. This allows me to connect to all of the servers again.

actually at the time i think the won servers were down. I had the same problem, but after researching i discovered the won servers were down and thus no connections could be established.

No matter how hard you don't want them to, Things eventually change.

He's probably already solved the problem, but we're still talking about it, heh heh heh 😉 It said in his post that it said that it had been WON authenticated, but he was timing out connecting to a server.

right i know that. but the same problem happened to me. I was won authenticated, but i still timed out after 4 retries. The problem was fixed when the won servers were fixed.

"you could explain how it is 'the worst thing to ever happen to the internet', I'd be very interested to hear it"

I'm not saying they are the worst thing to ever happen to the internet. I'm just saying they suck WHITE @$$. Which only means they need to be nuked off the face of the planet. Twice.

They need to be nuked. Have some cleric cast "Resurrection". Then nuked again. Just for the pleasure of destroying them twice.

Other than that, I happen to think they are the best thing that ever happened for the internet. But it is now time for them to die. No pain. No torture. Just dead.

Twice.

As far as the conflict with Halflife, I wouldn't be surprised to find them specifically blocking the packets. Aol is one micromanged POS, and Halflife/Unreal Tournament/Quake3 bogs down their bandwidth. Some bean counter, somewhere, probably read some liberal tabloid article and found that Aol was 35% more likely to get sued over some kid committing suicide and the negligent/retarded parents wanting to blame someone (other than themselves) so they blame the ISP and game developers. So Aol, literally, makes money by blocking Halflife.

Why don't you just allow Half Life to access teh internet. It should ask you the first time you started HL with zone alarm on. If you denied just tell it that HL and access now.

You should always have a firewall on. And ZA is good because it doens't allow progs that are on you sys without your knowledge to access the internet without your knowledge. It's systems that don't have this that are used for DOS attacks.

Use a firewall.
