Hi,

I have a problem I can't seem to find a solution to.

My parents have some old video footage from my childhood on a hard drive. But the files only show up on one smart LG tv. I would like to get the files out of this hard drive so I could watch them on PC and other devices. I brought the hard drive to local tech stores and tech repair shops. Noone could figure out a way to get the files out. The files don't show up at all when I open the hard drive on PC.

I had an idea to just record the TV screen while playing the video files but I don't find a way to record this TV screen while also playing videos from the hard drive.

Well, you may just need to unhide protected system files and hidden files/folders as a first step. I would think the shops would have tried that though.

If the files are there you could try a program like Recuva or Eraser to look for files that aren't necessarily recognized by your filesystem. The big question is what format are they and even if you managed to grab them, what then?

When you say hard drive were talking I bet were recorded on a mini hard drive that those older digital Camcorders had internal or are we talking SD card that some people call a hard drive.

How are you interfacing with TV that will play back those files. I remember old JVC digital camcorders had software that PC needed to decode raw video off cameras to be transferred from camera to PC.

In the TV manual that will play files it should list the types of media files the TV can read and display. That would at least be something to work with knowing that.

If the hard drives are formatted to the camera with out camera software your PC might not be able to see or read. More information on hard drive , what device did the recording and make and model of TV that can view them.

By hard drive i mean an external hard drive that is connected to TV with a USB cable.
The videos originally came from old vhs tapes. The LG smart TV had some way of putting the videos on the hard drive in this format that can only be seen by the TV.
Will have a look in the TV manual, myb I find something useful.

Does anyone know a way to just record the TV screen? That would be a simple way to solve my problem.

If you still have those VHS tapes that would be the easiest way to get the videos.
This sounds like a sort of piracy protection that the TV applies to anything it records so that it can offer the recording option without getting into trouble with copyright laws.
It will be incredibly difficult to get the videos.
Only option would be a good smartphone and some effort to set it up to take a decent (enough) video.
