hard drive high pitched noise

I have a Seagate 500gb 7200rpm HDD (ST500DM002), and after installing some quieter fans I can hear a high pitched noise coming from it. I can only hear it well if I point my head in a certain direction and it is one of those noises that only younger people can hear. Is there something wrong and should I RMA it?

I have run most of the tests and no errors are reported, in fact the noise seems to have gone now but I will restart soon and see what happens

ok, it stopped but when I next booted it up it started doing it again. I noticed something on the circular part of the drive (no idea what it's called), is this meant to be there?

That's seems to be normal. If your disk have passed the Seatool's short and long tests scans then I think you should have nothing to worry about. Just don't forget to do a regular backup of your important files.

I would also suggest you to make sure the HDD is securely fastened.

I was just wondering what that was on the metal circular part in the middle of the picture. I read up on the Seagate website that a high pitched whine is not normal. I think I will try contacting them at some point to see if I can get a replacement.

As I only have an SSD at the moment I probably won't return the drive for a while, if at all. The best way I can describe the noise is like when you turn on one of those really big old CRT TVs and it emits that really high pitched noise that adults can't hear.

High pitched noise is most of the times associated with hard drive motor issues. The testing tools may not detect that. I would advice you to back up your data and RMA it.

Ok yeah, I noticed that after playing Minecraft for a while on my SSD, the noise seems to stop. I also noticed the noise immediately starts again once I load a game off the Hard Drive, and it does not stop. I've looked it up and it seems like it would be bearing issues. I bought it with Scan and my RTB warranty is still valid, so I guess I could send it back for repairs?

Best thing you can do is to contact the manufacturer's support and eventually RMA it.

sent the drive back for RMA this morning so hope they can actually hear the sound XD
