HardDrive recommendation?

Hello, could someone please recommend a good UDMA HD? I wouldn't mind going
for a different interface but I'd prefer to keep it cheap and I'm not sure
if my ECS K7VMM+ mobo can support other methods. Also I'm running Win XP
Prof SP1.

I'm currently looking at the DiamondMax Plus9 200GB UDMA133
[£99.00 inc VAT from dabs.co.uk] ( or the DiamondMax Plus9 120GB UDMA133
£64.00 inc VAT which has much the same specification except much smaller
buffer size of only 2MB and it is SMART compliant) ::-

Those are good chooses but consider staying with the 80G platter. That is
the 80G or the 160G Maxtor.

any of the samsung p80s would be a good choice. very fast and the quietest
drive currently available. they have both PATA and SATA versions. theyre
also one of the few drive manufactures that still have a 3 year warranty on
OEM drives.

Maxtor's currently have a very high failure rate. You might want to
consider getting a WD.

Thanks for the quick replies! I don't know much about drives as you can
tell,, I'm assuming the bigger the buffer and the lower the seek times the
better ?

how about the Western Digital Caviar WD2000JB or WD1600BB.. or the Samsung

thanks for your opinions im open to suggestions lol.
Can anyone explain the interfaces to me please? According to AIDA32 my
current Maxtor Fireball uses an Ultra-ATA/133 interface..
the WD uses DMA/ATA-100 (Ultra) - 40 PIN IDC whereas I've seen others using
a 44PIN IDC.

So right you are. One more variable is areal density.
Rotational speed and areal density are a trade off. Faster the rotation
means lower areal density. Very device dependant.
Maxtor has no reliability problems. There is a visible effort in this group
to scare people into buying Asia Like the lack-luster Samsung and IBM.
