Hardware to avoid

not... exactly true. XP Home doesn't support more than a single CPU. But, as was proven when Intel released Hyperthreading, it does support multiple cores - provided they are in a single package.

I think thee was a fix for that included in SP2, and maybe your experience comes from a XP Home that was either installed on a single core system which saw its CPU upgraded (requires you to install a different kernel), or it was unpatched (pre-SP2).

I don't have an Home edition, so I can't say for sure. M$ only talk about licences on the matter.

not the steel one, noooooo!!!!!!

seriously, why not the aluminium one. i got it and it is really light. oh and did you get the new one with the 25cm fan? i have yet to find the replacement side panel which features it.

You want to buy a side panel? Heh, I got one for my Kandalf, purchased it seperately. Honestly? It does virtually nothing but interupt the front to back airflow. Had they included an adjustable funnel system for it to direct air directly over my CPU...well...just imagine. Somehow I think that might be seen in mods soon (*waits for project pictures from you guys...) Side panel 25cm fans with funnel seems like an awesome idea. If I get all my wiring out of the way I may have to give that some thought. 😛 One of these days I'll clean it up...maybe. I'm still waiting to see if they come out with wireless PSU's. Think I'll be waiting long?

I keep hearing people having problems with Maxtor drives. I've always used maxtor and only 1 failed on me, and that was only because it was really old and it was bound to happen.

Otherwise I've been happy with maxtor drives and have never had another problem with them, and I have many maxtor drives.

I personally dont like IBM drives because they I've had problems with them and the rear connections are flimsy.
My experience w/ maxtor goes like this:
Got a 10GB Maxtor that came with my Dell.
That one lasted until I sold it and got a 40GB Maxtor.
That one lasted until I sold it and got a 160GB Maxtor.
That one lasted until I sold it and got a 250GB Serial ATA Maxtor.
I also got a Maxtor combination IDE/SATA disk controller PCI card with that one.
Thinking of selling and getting a 500GB Maxtor.

I think the key point here is you keep selling them before they die. I have a 10gb Seagate from about 8 years ago...still running...It's seen a good half decade of consistent spin time. That said, we'll see how these WD raptors do at 10K rpms.

I know I should mention hardware one should avoid, so I will phrase what I have to say like this:

Avoid dual core processors if you plan on running Windows XP Home Edition.

Since dual core processors are very popular and allot of people seem to be building new systems around these processors, I just wanted to inform people that might try installing Windows XP Home Edition with a dual core processor. Home Edition doesn't support dual core processing.

What I really wanted to say was:

Avoid installing Windows XP Home Edition if you plan on building a dual core system.

lol, noob post of the month or at least the week.

seriously you people piss me off with your "statements" about "facts".

that has been known to be false for about 2 years+ and there is still people who think otherwise due to not being able to google or just read properly. i know you are a newbie to these forums but you still require to be shot. unless you offer an apology i would suggest you leave.

It was getting late and I misread the information; XP Home does support dual core processors, but it doesn't support systems with two CPU's. Just woke up and can't believe how poorly I misunderstood what I had read. Yes, I am a noob, and I apologize for any confusion I might have caused.

*cough* ANYTHING DELL *cough*

8)-~

naah, actually their huge a$s 30 inchers have got a good warranty and are cheaper than the one made by Apple Inc.

lolz@Crashman

anything VIA or SiS

Mega cheap cases. Many times i've cut myself on cheapass crappy cases. Mega cheap PSU's with high wattage values, even a 750w cheapy wasnt able to run my 6800GT without complaints.

mail order brides. poor performance, poor resale value

anything VIA or SiS
They find a home in $500 supermarket crapbags, off the rack Dells, HPs, Gateways and the like.
In short, in the homes of the ppl that dont know wich is the most important component of a computer.

LMAO, Dell has used Intel chipsets exclusively in its desktop products...up to the point where they recently added nVidia. Gateway also used mostly Intel chipsets, though they did use tiawanese brands in their AMD systems (like they would have had a choice).

The place you're most likely to come across SiS and VIA is in BTO, which BTW means Build To Order, whitebox venders, the kind of crap you get from discount mom and pop shops, computer fairs, and the like. Perhaps Systemax as well, a company that tries to bring the low quality of Computer Fair systems up to Dell-style distribution numbers.

Yeh, basically the "crap boxes" you speak of use mostly good chipsets, while those glorious "custom PC's" and "homebuilts" end up with SiS and VIA.

I believe you on the HP, they use whatever Asus gives them a good deal on. As for Dell, I'm fairly certain they don't have so much as an SiS driver on their site, let alone a chipset.

Now, SiS has made some good chipsets, the 735, 745, and 645 were industry leading. But that's not enough to entice Dell.

My mobo is a microstar not an Asus but yeah definetly VIA chipset. Ill check again on my friends comp with CPU-Z since it was 8+months ago and my memory could be faulty :?

add one more company's hardware:

Powmax PSU's!!!!

Mine had tons of problems and just recently failed. Bought a new FSP PSU and now it works fine.

Actually, in general, don't get the PSU's that come bundled with the cheap cases.
