Has my Sony Viao laptop died?

Tried with battery in and out but laptop will not start. When you press the power button it starts for seconds then I can almost hear a sort of 'ping' coming from the back of the laptop. Then it dies. Obviously screen stays black.
Has it died? In panic mode as documents/photos not backed up! Have I lost everything?
Help! Please someone?

Thanks for that but sure it does not need a new battery. It should work just with its power lead anyway!??? It appears to try to power up but dies within second. As said, screen remains black - nothing at all showing on the screen?
Advice welcome please?
