I recently bought a 120mm fan that I wanted to blow air from the front of my case to the back. It was way too hard to screw it into the front of my case so I used twist-ties to secure it into the empty drive slot area. It ended up being pretty darn secure!

I was just curious if anyone else has done something similar to get a fan into their case.

I've used ducttape and zipties to get fans on certain areas for benching.. for regular usage my case has plenty of fan slots.

8 120mm fan slots?! Really? It must be a big case. Do you use most of them with 120mm fans?

I've used zip ties to secure a fan before.

The case I was working on had bays for 4, 5.25" devices. Only the top most bay was being used but I needed to install an extra fan in the case. So I used four zip ties (one to each corner) run through the mounting holes on the fan, securing the other end of the zip ties to the sides of the 5.25" drive bays. And voila! I had myself a fan suspended in mid-air by four zip ties.

Not strictly by the book of course but it didn't need to look pretty, it just needed to work. Especially since the whole thing would be covered up by the case and wouldn't even be seen.

Ziptied a 40mm fan and a 80mm fan into a jury-rigged Compaq mobo in an old case.
Drilled holes to mount a 120mm fan into the side of my case where there was just a vent.
Ziptied a 80mm fan into the front of a Compaq case.

are you kidding me? that's why hot-glue was invented! I use a combo of hot-glue, electrical tape and zip ties, along with my trust dremmel tool, to put fans in all kinds of places. the nb gets pretty hot on those 965p-ds3s.

I have a 500w PSU and want to add more fans but am not sure of the voltage sitch. How many fans do most of you normally throw into your case? I have six 80mm and one 120mm fan going right now and would like to add one more (possibly just securing it to the bottom of the case blowing straight up to the exhaust fan blowing out the top).

Yall are going way to underpowered for my taste!!!

My brothers PC was having an overheating problem. I did not want to buy a new PC at the time so we got to play!!

I removed the sides of the case and put to 24" boxes fans on either side, one pulling and one pushing air. It was insane, but it did the trick for him to game for another 6 months.

While I haven't done any jury-rigging in my current rig (though I plan to with xmas monies) I have made a couple of zip-tie mounts in my housemate's box. Firstly I had to suspend a 80mm fan in the middle of the external 3+1/2 inch drive bays ... took 8 zip-ties in the end.

Then we had a little bit of difficulty mounting his scythe infinity - the way it was meant to go in wouldn't work as the heatpipes were hitting the VRMs. So in the end I used the 775 mounting (he has an AM2) with zip ties through the AM2 bracket so that I could mount it at 90degrees. It's actually giving really good temperatures :)

OP - I haven't done so long term, but yes, on occasion I rig whatever's needed at the time. Mostly while testing/troubleshooting, though.

I bet she was *very* pissed off.... 😱 <ducks and runs>

Haha! 😀

>.<

I used zip ties to the chassis of an old game server. The fan was suspended in such a way to blow across the processor heatsinks (no fans on the HS) of a dual socket P2 server board that I used as a CS/TFC server back in the day.

haha i had a power supply burn out with a 14 cm fan i use the case of the psu with the fan and set it in the bottom of my case and cut out the psu box so that it would get great airflow underneath and then had to splice it in with another fan because that fan was soldered to the psu board, but it works amazing and is super quiet basically have it directly on my vid card, keeps it so cool

Jerry-rig? YOU BETCHA!

I use zip-ties, mechanics wire, hot glue, and any other method I need to use, in order to get cooling where I need it. After all, it does make "Mod" your computer and makes it more fun at the same time.

My dad flipped the fan off the heatsink of the stock intel cooler. I cut one support off and part of another. I mounted it on the outside of the HDD cage because the cable would reach the mobo and the supports fit into the holes. 3 twists ties later, I can't move it unless I really try.
