this is a carry over from my system building thread. the question though seems more fitting over here. i have saved $1000 for the GPU(s) in my next system and acknowledge that every day componens are being outdated. I have read up on the 7000 and Keplers on the proposed prices but the features are above my head. if i buy and build a system right now should i get the current series or should i wait out ivy bridge and grab one of the new GPUs as the timing is scheduled to roughly coincide (April 2012ish)?

I do gaming of all kinds AND do video production in the Adobe suite. Also I dont really get all the specifications like my knoledge may be perceived. I just do my research. Card(s) to be parked on an ASUS board of some ilk in a Thermaltake Level 10
GT.

the 5970 is a dual gpu card, its technically 2 5870's down clocked, you actually would either overclock your 5970 to the same speed as the 5870 (that's what i do) or down clock your 5870 to the speeds of the 5970's gpus, if that makes sense, the 5970 runs at 725mhz stock i believe for each gpu, and the 5870 has a single gpu running at 850 stock.

mmmm if you are going beyond 1920x1080 trifire 5870's may run out of vram
but perhaps not. As mentioned that would deffinately be the most powerfull setup available to you if any move under 1000 dollars. I'm pretty sure that it is even more powerfull than the 580x2 mars.

Ha just did the math 4800 shaders....that is bananas

Two GTX 580's may be able to outperform an HD 5970 and a HD 5870 in some cases. I know it's a great card and all but I cannot recommend old hardware like that. Doesn't the HD 5970 have heat and noise issues as well?

no way 2 gtx580's out perform a 5970+5870 trifire, its 3gb of video ram on 3 gpu's. and the plus he already has a 5870, i run this setup and am air cooled on a 850watt psu and heat is fine and noise could be better but its not a bother at all, probably not much of a noise improvement from 2 gtx 580's, and as for resolution, see link below

as you can see from the links the 5970 owns all cards but 6990 and gtx590 and the 5870 is only 5 fps of off the gtx580, be smart and keep your 5870, get a 5970 and you'll have better performance then a gtx590 for 1/3 the price and then like i said pocket your money or spend in on a beast cpu or something ha,

We aren't saying it's a bad card, in fact it's a superb card. But there are more modern options he could consider since budget does not seem to be an issue here.

well what is more modern?? id say you go for best performance, and the 5970, unless going for 6990 is the top performer, and the 6990 is no longer manufactured, just because the 5970 was made well before its time ha does not mean it still cannot be the best option.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I prefer a single fast card or 2 fast cards over a dual GPU card. It may not be the best performing card but new technology isn't always about being fast, it's also about power consumption, cooling capabilities, materials, heat production, etc. The HD 5970 is a great card, no doubt; but I would rather pay a little more for a single fast card that will perform worse but will also consume less power, produce less heat, etc.

If the OP wants to upgrade his HD 5870 for another AMD card then I believe he should wait a few months. If he wants an nVIDIA card, then there are plenty of great options available now that should suit his needs.

Whatever was released after the 5970 would be considered more modern.

well thats great and im glad for you but performance wise you cant dispute what i have said so good try

What if the OP doesn't want the best performance for the price? He may want a quiet, efficient system.

Well the 5970 is not overbearing with noise, i run it and its really not, he said he was considering crossfire 6950's and that's just as loud i can promise you, he already has a 5870 if you trifire with it you will get better performance for a fraction of the price, and if you are still concerned about noise go buy a cooler for the 5970 for 60 bucks and your still way under cost, and better in performance 5970 beats 580 buy too much to consider a 580 for more money. and its about on par with the gtx590 and beats it in some cases

well i can tell that you in fact are a child talking to say that because the 5970 is better then mostly any card out there,

going back to the comment, 2011 ford focus vs ill even say 2007 Cadillac, Caddy wins all day
