i have a sapphire hd 6870 , i've made a custom profile in msi afterburner for the fan speed because if i leave it default the sound annoys me too much when i'm playing a game but to be honest with default fan profile it won't go over 75 degrees C

so i made that under 80 degrees the fan won't go over 55% @ around 2.1k RPM and over 80 will go until 60% fan speed but it never went over 81 and 57% fan speed

i'm playing atm world of tanks which is poorly optimized and when you're in the garage it's like a benchmark , holding your gpu around 95% usage so in garage i get a max temp of 81 degrees C when the fan goes at 57% speed for 2 seconds then goes down to 54% but when i'm actually playing the temp is between 72 and 77, only in garage i hit 80-81 max

my question , is 77-81 a safe temperature for my hd 6870 or should i switch back to default fan profile and the temp won't go over 75C in garage ? but the fan speed goes up to 70% speed and it's like a jet engine

i cleaned my gpu a few days ago , so it's not dusty anymore and i'm thinking of replacing the thermal compound as well

any thoughts ? thanks

the thing is , i got this gpu in late 2012 and i tested it in furmark for 12 minutes , i got 54% fan speed and a max temp of 74C , now , in furmark i get 84C and almost 70% fan speed , tomorrow i'll replace the thermal paste so i hope that will make a difference

Furmark is good for testing your total power draw and that's it really lol and some games are worse to play than others for your GPU but replacing your thermal paste on GPU is a great idea. I had a Sapphire 6850 and replaced thermal paste on that and got 5-10 degrees lower than factory paste 😀

so i replaced the thermal paste today with a cheap one , spire blue frost and now i have the temps like this: idle 33(from 38) and full load 75 , it didn't make wonders but still

Perhaps that cheap thermal paste needs a curing time of so many hours etc, if it does smash your GPU on some games for a few days then do another test to see if the temps have flattened out :) my recommendation for thermal paste would have to be either MX-2 or MX-4, I've used both and both are great.
