(I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTH) I need better help than I was getting elsewhere.

Hey all, I am looking to upgrade my graphics card. I seem to keep reading that one needs to upgrade 3 levels for a competent upgrade. I am not sure what that means so I have a Gigabyte 2 Hd 7850 currently. What would be a considerable upgrade for that card? I must say, I am not made of money so I will stick with what I have if the only upgrade is $500.00+ card. My entire pc setup was only $900.00. Soooo. Anyway, any help would be great. I started this same post on the afterdawn.com forums and got one reply in a week, I answered the reply and nothing..it has been 3 days now, since i answered the questions. I didn't realize is was such a difficult question. The original question has been viewed with my second and tertiary response over 300 times by somebody. Here is my last response to the reply of my initial question.

Another poster's questions: what are you using the computer for, gaming, browsing or what? what are your system specs including psu? what are the games you are playing & what do they want for a video card?

My Response:
Here are my specs, and I am using it for gaming for the most part & watching all of my tv shows that I miss. and, I will give you the games I have installed on my PC now, just the .exe icons on my secondary monitor.

Windows 8 -64GB
AMD FX 8120 3.10GHz (eight core)
RAM: 16GB
Seagate 1TB HDD 7200
Seagate 2TB HDD 7200
Gigabyte M.B. GA-78LMT-USB3
Corsair 600W Power Supply

Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Battlefield 4, Bioshock, 1, 2, & 3, Borderlands, 1 & 2-( I will be getting 3), DC Universe Online, Dead Space 1, 2 & 3, Diablo III, Divine Divinity: Original Sin, Doom 3 BFG, Dungeons and Dragons; Daggerdale, Enclave, Eevequest 1 & 2, Fallout 3, Guild Wars 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Kingdom of Amalur, Minecraft, Morrowind, Path of Exile, Rift, Rise of Nations, Sacred 2, Shadowrun Returns, Skyrim (modded to hell & back), Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, Stalker-Clear Sky, Stalker- Call of Pripyat, The Witcher 1 & 2, Thief, Tomb Raider (newest), Torchlight 2, Transformers; War for Cyberton, Wasteland 2, Wolfenstein; New Order. Then about 22 more with in Steam, some of them do not have desktop icons.
All of them, minus the ones that were created prior to 2000 ask for a modern video card. Specifically, you will have to look each up to find out that. I just wanted to know what 3 tier higher video card would I need to look for to replace this one.

Hey Clutchc and Ragingninja. I like the price of the GTX 970, the 980 is hitting to close to the build of my entire pc, from last summer. Under 500 and the lower the better for me. I just wanted something that was, as Clutchc said was off the chart of being 3tiers higher than what I have that will give me substantial gaming time into the future, basically future-proofing my gaming for a good while.
So the GTX 970 is a good 3 steps up from the HD7850? I guess you both like it alot? I have to head to applebees for about an hour or so, once I return I will check out some youtube videos of PC gaming with the GTX 970.

Thanks you two! I knew Tomshardware.com would not let me down.

Regards,
Mereinid

The 970 has been proved to perform on par and sometimes better than the GTX 780, which is a lot pricier. The 970 is also crazy efficient, with the 780 being 250 watts, the 970 has a 148 watt TDP. It will improve your electric bill! There are hundreds of benchmarking videos, overclocking videos, and reviews of the new 900 series GPUs and (even me being an AMD fanboy) I definitely think it's the right card for you.

mosti, ragingninja77, clutchc, I wanted to stop in here real quick and say thank you, very very much, for taking the time to answer my question. I am 100% going to go with the GTX 970. I found an EVGA that says it's superclocked. I am thinking of going with this one, as I am not very comfortable with OC'ing. Mostly as I have never tried it before. If you have a min and look at the super clocked card listed below, I would appreciate it. Whether or not this fills the OC stipulations that Mosti mentioned doing;

Thanks!

All though it's "superclocked" it's no where near clocked to it's potential. To be honest, out of all the reviews I've read, evga is one that never caught my eye. I would not suggest the EVGA SOC card.

I've got galax EOC's and the price is amazing and they really are a great card. At a low price, this card includes a backplate and a powerful fan design. Overclocks nice as well. Only downfall is it's a newly formed company (yes I know how it originated but it's stil a newly formed company) and support for things such as waterblocks etc are non existent and may stay that way. If you are planning on watercooling with a custom loop, do not get this card.

If you want raw power out of the box, the Gigabyte G1 gaming is the fastest clocked gtx 970 but at the expense of a little more noise (but runs cooler) then the others. This card is larger then the rest so make sure it's going to fit into your case. Uses more power then the rest, from memory it was something like 20watts extra under full load then the asus strix. This is your best option if you want the fastest card without overclocking . However, bear in mind, even though it is the fastest, the difference aren't major so if you can't find a good price, perhaps look towards a difference card.

The msi looks awesome and runs quiet but I've heard of problems with overclocking temps due to their fan technology messing with your fan curves. This problem has come up a couple of times but I've also seen reviews and benchmarks of this card where people haven't even had bad news about it at all. This card overclocks very well. Bear in mind, the problem i mentioned won't affect you what so ever. This is one of the quiter cards.

Asus strix. Much like the msi, this card looks awesome and asus are known for their quality. This card is the slowest out of the box but again, these aren't major differences in gaming, we are talking a couple frames difference. It has 0db fan technology which makes this the quitest gtx 970 non-reference card available.

As you can see, each card has their perks but they are all good cards.

Hey Mosti, thank you so much for the info, I did some reviwing of the Gigabyte G1 and I am going to go with that one. I have let the powers that be know, that that would be a nice little something something for X-mas month after next. A nice review for this card was here. Top notch and gives OC values as well.

I might step back in here to find out how to OC it, as it seems to be able to move up quite a bit in power. So be around later on! lol

Are you purchasing the card now or getting it for christmas? If waiting till christmas, please don't have santa order it now. Wait till a later date as rumor has it, nvidia is unleashing some suprises are christmas time. There will certainly be a GTX 980ti (which is suppose to be an absolute beast based on spec leaks). Also seen talk of 6GB GTX 970's and if this is so, there will most likely be price drops for the 4GB version.

But if you are purchasing now, by all means...the G1 is a perfect choice! Just make sure it's going to fit in your case as it is a longer card then the others. Time to get your tape measure out haha.
