The disk is a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM. This morning a random restart occurred and right after my PC says "insert boot media" which I attribute to windows failing to update for some time now, but then I go to download something and the HDD is gone, from dsk manager, from explorer and nothing from event viewer to say its failing or failed. But a few months ago the disk started getting 100% active time with no load and forced me to reinstall windows to my SSD, because you had to wait 2 minutes to open explorer. Is it really dead if the bios can still see it connected or is it some other very special issue? The drive is somewhere between 6 and 13 years old, every other PC part is ~2 years old

If the BIOS can see it, it might still be alive. I'd advise that you remove the afflicted HDD and pair it with a dock/adapter to a donor laptop or on another system internally. As for the drive, just from looking at the age, you might've just given it the burial seeing how the age might've just tipped it over to the point of no return when the 100% usage hit, which was actually a memory leak issue, stemming from a corruption in your OS.

Speaking of OS, what version of Windows 10 are you on? Where did you source your installer for the OS? On a much larger picture, what is the make and model of the PSU? Specs to your entire build?

Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 20H2
Installed on ‎06-‎May-‎21
OS build 19042.928
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.551.0
Whole OS is legit from MS, but it fails to update since May, so I created a separate thread for that

PC
PSU - Corsair RM550x
Mobo - MSI Z-390A PRO
CPU - I5-9600k
RAM - 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3200C16
GPU - MSI 970 4GB
SSD - Samsung 860 EVO 1TB (Sys drive)
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1TB

and I ran chkdsk a few times on the HDD before it ghosted me without any errors, just a real long run time cuz of the 100% thing (~24 hours)
