I see now, Xrib! Thank you for the pictures! :)
WD's Diagnostic tool should be able to detect other brands as well, however, you should stick to the original manufacturer's HDD diagnostic tool. In case they do not have such a utility, you can refer to third-party testing tools as well.

However, if Data LifeGuard Diagnostics is unable to detect it and the other utility is crashing and listing it as 0 MB, I'm afraid your HDD is dead. 🙁 Since you don't have any important data on it, you should simply consider replacing it with a new one. Unfortunately, there's nothing more you can do about it.

Best of luck!

Hey there, Xrib!

I'd recommend you to use the original HDD manufacturer's brand-specific or a third-party diagnostic tool in order to determine the HDD health status and SMART data. Another advantage of this utility would be the fact that it should list your hard drive's model number, so you should be able to see who the original manufacturer is after all. You should also try using a different computer to try and access your external HDD's data.

I'd also go to Disk management and try to assign a different drive to the external HDD. It might help you get your hands on the files as well.

Keep me posted with the SMART results.

What do you refer by the original HDD manufacturer?
It was bought as sony but the actual drive says samsung on it
I tried to use HD Tune for the S.M.A.R.T. data and this is what i got

HD Tune Pro: WDC WD5000AAKX-22ERMA0 Health

I think it may have a few damaged sectors
I tried using some software called partition guru but it took too much time for almost no result
I'll try and do error scan and get back as soon as possible
Thanks a lot, your help is much appreciated

Hey there again, Xrib!

I'm afraid that you are not detecting the correct HDD. These SMART results indicate that there are several pending sectors (waiting to be remapped a.k.a. bad sectors) on a 3.5" Western Digital hard drive. However, I'd still recommend you to use WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows and run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests. Once you click on View SMART data above the listed drives in the WD utility, you should be able to benchmark both SMART attributes. If the count hasn't decreased, you should consider low-level formatting as well. Keep in mind that this procedure would write zeros to the entire hard drive, meaning all data stored on it will be lost!

The model of the tested HDD is a 3.5" WD Blue, are you sure this is the drive from your external?

Keep me updated!

Okay sorry i accidentally gave you my pc's HDD SMART data
really sorry

It's starting to sound really confusing but please bare with me

This is what i bought
http://www.sony.co.in/electronics/external-hard-drives/hd-sl1
And data loss is not an issue
Will this utility work with HDD of a different make or would I have to get that company's utility?

The drive and it's current case

HDTune crashes when i select the external HDD now
and it shows as Seagate 0mb

it may possible that they had changed the case and as well as the magnetic disk inside the HDD. so that you were able to get your data back. if you are not having any important data on HDD then get it replaced completely from the center. if they are sending you the drive after taking a long time than that means they have altered the hardware. if it is returned in proper time then you are having the new drive. you can ask them for new drive as well as you can ask them that the drive is not giving the proper performance. so that is the reason you want to get your HDD replaced.
