I think i have answer maybe, but before i return monitor + adapter to Dell want to check. I have hdmi output only on new laptop and bought a 24'' monitor which i realized only had Direct port and VGA. I bought an adapter off the store hdmi/direct port adapter. Didn't work or do anything. Return the monitor to dell being i only have hdmi output on laptop ? Exchange maybe for 24'' with vga and hdmi but trying to avoid hassle of shipping etc.

Buying that adapter was useless and send it back ?

Tell us how you tried the adapter?
You usually have to manually switch from the laptops display to the external monitor. Usually this is done by pressing a key combo (like Fn+F2 on my laptop)

Whats the model# of your Dell, perhaps we can look it up in your manual.

Inspiron 15 5000 Series (Intel(R)) - 5558 was bought with only a HDMI output then a Dell E2416H 24 Monitor was bought and relaized only had Direct port and VGA " No idea about direct port and so it looked like an HDMI so i assumed that's what it was. Bought an adapter i got today and no go nothing. Nothing recognozed by laptop or graphics there and nothing done with menu on display asking for AUTO - VGA - Direct port and tried all three. The adapter is a Dell Adapter - DisplayPort to HDMI. Box up this monitor and adapter and send back waiting for another exchange fpor 3-4 weeks or i did order a HDMI to VGA but would suck if that knocked out quality in a major way. That comes in tomorrow with HDMI-VGA adapter

After sifting though this internet i see the words Direct Port source to HDMI monitor solutions and directions but no comments or information regarding the opposite-- HDMI source to a direct port display. All the adapters seem to refer to that. I did find one area of info on internet where someone stated that HDMI source TO to a Direct Port was not possible or capable. HHmmm......well i have the VGA adapter coming in tomorrow and will be interesting to see video quality. An HDMI source-laptop converted with adapter to a VGA port on monitor VGA . FN+F8 brings me to setting with display again through the control panel window, but still doesn't recognize there is even any monitor plugged in.

Take it all back and go through the waiting for new monitor ? You think there will be that much loss in picture quality with HDMI laptop to VGA port on monitor ? ?

This link that stated "not all" will work in reference to Direct port. I guess maybe they are talking about mine
