HDMI monitor is not playing sound

I have an LG monitor with speakers as well as a GTX 550ti that has an HDMI port. I was using a VGA cord, but recently switched to HDMI in order to be able to use the speakers. The volume shows that it is working, and I have fiddled around with various Nvidia (graphics card manufacturer) and Realtec (audio stuff, not exactly sure) drivers, but as of yet, I have been able to play sound through the monitor.

Have you verified that the HD audio device on your NVIDIA graphics device is set as your default audio output? Windows may still be routing sound to your normal sound hardware, if it hasn't been told to route it to the audio output on the graphics device.

Right mouse-click the speaker icon in the system notification area and select Playback devices from the context menu.

In the Sound dialogue box that opens, left mouse-click the HD audio device on your NVIDIA graphics device, and click the Set Default button. This instructs Windows to send all sound output to that device first.

If you don't know which device is the correct one to choose, you can right mouse-click on each listed device and...

What is the make and model of the monitor? Does the monitor actually support HDMI Audio or does it require a separate Audio cable. Check the specs of the monitor to make sure that HDMI Audio input is supported. Also, make sure that your HDMI cable supports HDMI Audio as well.

the problem as I have been trying to say is that the only thing that appears when I do this is my headphones.

Try this. Right click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of windows. Pick "playback devices". There should be choices of output in the "playback" tab. If the checkmark is on headphones choose hdmi.

Before you power your computer on, you should make sure your screen is turned on, so your graphics card detects the HDMI connection correctly.

You might also verify that the audio output is enabled over your HDMI connection.

Right mouse-click a blank portion of the Windows Desktop and choose NVIDIA Control Panel from the context menu.

In the NVIDIA Control Panel window that opens, left mouse-click the Change resolution item under the Display heading.

Under the heading 2. Apply the following settings. verify that the Connector: selection lists HDMI with Audio Enabled.

I'm afraid I am out of suggestions for the moment. Not currently running NVIDIA in any of my computers at the house, and from what I read, NVIDIA has problems properly detecting audio capable devices over HDMI connections under some circumstances, and in other cases the audio is intentionally disabled where it may cause some sort of screen corruption. It may be the case for you that NVIDIA's drivers are not correctly identifying that your screen has audio, and therefore disabling the HDMI audio output, or detecting an incompatible screen. There should be some sort of manual override, but really the best I can do at the moment would be web searches, which you can also perform. Good luck, and I do hope you get to the bottom of things. I would make sure you have the latest NVIDIA drivers from here:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

and then scour the NVIDIA Control Panel for anything related to connection type (HDMI) or audio.

Select your country of origin, if you are asked. At the top of the page, point to Drivers, then select All NVIDIA Drivers. This should direct you to the page I had linked to.

So I woke up this morning with no audio coming from my display with the HDMI jack plugged in. I tried switching cords but not devices so my conclusion was that the HDMI port must be malfunctioning. Being a hard-headed, mouth-breathing, technophobe, I probed my computer with the grace of a linebacker breaking tackles on his way to a touchdown, but for me there was no end-zone in sight... funny thing about insight... it isn't something that develops over time or with practice, rather, it is a moment of inspired cognitive functioning the likes of which generally result in a triumphant "AHA!"

My AHA moment came from reading this thread and executing the directions given even though I had tried each iteration at one point or another... My insight came in a rush of contradictory feelings regarding the hour and a half spent poking around the innards of my computer like a blind man performing an appendectomy...

In short, my problem was fixed when I found the TV remote and turned the volume up.

Thanks for adding that, jobobjr! It's good to be reminded to check the simple stuff too. Like a lesson from college many years ago, when after an instructor had swapped the dean's motherboard in her computer in a vain attempt to resuscitate it, to realize the computer's user had inadvertently turned off the power strip with her foot. He came into class to teach us his lesson, as he didn't want it to go to waste. 🙂

I am having the same problem on my LG 29UM57-P. There is absolutely no sound and my NVIDIA control panel is telling me under resolution that the connector is HDMI-HDTV but I don't know how to change it. Any help? Thanks!

Thread is old, but still relevant so will post an answer that works here after reviewing 10+ forum threads. Setup is a Lenovo T450 laptop w/ Intel 5500 integrated graphics on Win7 Pro, driving an LG 34" ultrawide monitor with HDMI. Audio playback devices included a "WsAudio" device and Realtek for the laptop, but no audio device for the monitor itself. Found comments on this that were flat out wrong, stating that there should not be an audio playback device with the monitor's name. Yes there should be, and the way to fix this issue is as follows: Step 1, go into Device Mgr, right click your Display Adapter and choose "Update Driver". This will update the Intel graphics driver to include HDMI support. Step 2, go back into your audio Playback Devices and you will see a new entry, mine is "LG Ultrawide, Intel(R) Display Audio". Bingo! Right-click to make that the default device, and you're done. Doesn't even require a reboot to make this work. Problem was easy to solve once I had the right information, which I found on a Dell user forum site.
