Hello, This is my first time here I have HDMI out in my future graphic card and my monitor has DVI input. What is the best recommended adapter/cable that is required?

Thank you.

I'm planning to buy ati 4890. It does come with DVI but I dunno if DVI is better than HDMI. Also, do you recommend any card other than that? I've planned to go with Intel E8400 3ghz, GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P or GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L(dunno which is better), RAM-4gb 800mhz, 650W PSU and Antec 300 gaming chassis. I have 640gigs HDD from WD as well as a 24x DVD-RW drive. Thanks for responding. I appreciate your help.

If can afford another $70, go with an HD5850. It'll last you for quite some time.

As for HDMI/DVI, the adapters won't make a difference. If your monitor doesn't support HDMI quality, then the adapter won't force it to.

There won't be any real difference between using DVI and HDMI to connect to a monitor. Most people use the HDMI out to connect to HDTVs, since HDMI carries both audio and video while DVI only carries video. Both fully support all of the common HD resolutions.

I recommend using the DVI out to connect your monitor, as an adapter is much more likely to cause a problem than just using the standard connection, but either way will work fine.

For the motherboard, if you are ever going to consider Crossfiring two cards or if you need Firewire ports, you should get the UD3P. Otherwise, the only other difference between them is that the UD3P has slightly better onboard sound.

The 4890 is a good card, but you may also want to look at the 5770. Its performance is very slightly lower, but so is the price, and you'll get whatever benefits come out of DX11.

You can buy HDMI->DVI converter and it works fine. I got it work on one of my old 20 inch Viewsonic LCD(which has DVI inputs).

Go to pc stores such as FRYs and be attentive to the gender when you purchase the converter.

Thanks a lot guys. What's the difference between HD4890 and HD5850?..And thanks Selicate, I think I would go with the UDL probably cuz 5850 can't be crossfired with 5870(according to my knowledge..plz tell me I'm wrong!)

The 5850 is the second best card in ATI's newest generation. It performs about the same as the 4890, doing slightly better in some benchmarks. It does cost more, but it uses less power, runs cooler and quieter, and has support for DX11. You can read the Tom's Hardware review of the 5850 here.

You can Crossfire within the 5800 series, but it would be silly to since the 5870 will be downclocked to match the 5850s speeds. You'd want to get either two 5850s to save money, or two 5870s for the power.

Thanks man! I'm going with it. Dad's christmas gift this year. A new card, mobo, processor, PSU and chassis. BTW, is the 650W sufficient or do I need more for the 5850?

A quality brand 650W psu is fine for a single 5850 and the rest of your build. What brand have you selected?

It does come with two 6-pin connectors.

I know India uses different plugs than the US, so you may want to watch out for that. Most power supplies come with a separate detachable power cord, so if you already have a cord with the proper plug for your country then you should be ok. Just make sure you select the correct voltage using the switch on the back of the PSU, as this one does not come with PFC and you'll have to set the voltage manually.

Okay. Thanks a lot selicate. I've finalized the following.

Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 , Intel Core i5, ATI 5850, SONY 24x DVD-RW, I have 640GB 7200rpm Western Digital HDD. What power supply wattage would you recommend(650W or 750W)? Also is Antec 300 chassis good for it or do I require Antec 900?

Sincerely,

Pramit

The UD2 is a smaller form factor Micro ATX board, and I'm not sure if the Antec 300 has the mounts for Micro ATX. The rest of the parts will all fit into that case easily, and 650w will be fine. Lastly, make sure the RAM you buy is DDR3.
