Question Headphone jack issue with quiet and crackly earphones

Hey,

So about a month ago my headphone jack at the front of my PC died. The front ports on my case have always been funny so it didn't come as a surprise. Strangely, though, whenever i plug headphoes into the front port the PC shorts out and restarts. Strange but I thought no big deal, i'll just use the rear port and it does work... Kinda. The sound is now very low, probably reduced by about 60% (I.E when it's on 100 volume it sounds like its only on 40) and it also crackles. I've done the obvious things like change headphones, make sure the volume mixer is all the way up etc etc.. Can't find anything on Google or in my PC settings so i'm thinking its a hardware issue. I downloaded some software that supposedly fixed it and it did bring the volume back but it was a lot of hassle to do every time i plugged my headphones in and it just crackled more. Yes, the headphones do work on my laptop at full volume without any problems, it's just on my PC. Does anyone have any idea what this or what it's about?

Cheers,
Callum.

Power off and unplug your PC.

Open the case and check all of the audio cables serving the headphone jacks. Both ends....

See if there are any signs of cracks or damage around the jacks - front and back.. Inspect inside the jacks with a bright flashlight - look for debris or signs of internal damage.

Already done that. Nothing. All ports seem intact and clean.
