Headset issues

Okay, right now i have a headset that has a short in the wire somewhere. It will cut out to only the right or left speaker in the headset and the mic isn't always working. I got it for xmas so not sure on the quality.

My question is, what do I look for in a headset/headphones to make sure it won't short out and good quality?

Secondly, good pair of headphones? I listen to a lot of music, gaming, and such so a headset would be best. I prefer something over ear, or clip on, or behind the neck, I hate inner ear and the ones that just sit in your ear.

Also, is there anyway to fix a short?

No, it is time to replace the pair of headphones you have now. In general, it is almost always best to avoid buying headphones/headsets from "gaming" companies like Razer, Turtle Beach, and SteelSeries. You're going to want to stick with companies like Sennheiser, Audio Technica, and Creative. For your microphone, buy a Zalman Zm-Mic clip on mic. It will sound just as good if not better than any mic that comes on a headset and it is really cheap.

You really haven't listed anything specific for what you want in a pair of headphones so I strongly recommend reading this article on audio. In general, anything you buy from a reputable audio company will sound better than anything from the "gaming" companies. Yes you can get headsets from gaming companies that sound just as good but you're going to pay an arm and a leg for that quality.
