I just got a gtx980 and just for the first time ever checked my CPU temps, and i used msi afterburner on my evga card and while playing games it ranges from 65-80 degrees. I think i have a stock cooler i currently have a gigabyte z97 mobo and a i7 4790k. is this normal temps for cpu? idle it sits at around 35 degrees according to mwmonitor, the max on hwmonitor i saw was 91 degrees. i think thats just during load screens.

also, if not can you guys please recommend a cooler for me that would be compatible with this mobo. thank you

Solution
I do not know what some of youre'e words mean. Like "nd" for example. But i think i am understanding your'e question. "Does MSI afterburner have any effect on my cpu temperatures? Because before i installed MSI afterburner my temps was max 90 degrees." If that is what you mean, no, MSI afterburner do not effect your'e cpu temperatures.
Yes, that is normal temps with a stock cooler, but i would get a better cooler anyway. The i7 4790k deserves a better cooler than the stock one. and by the way can i see the rest of your'e specs? The noctua nh d15 and d14 are great coolers, you cant go wrong with any of these. If you have tall ramsticks, the nh d15 may not fit with both the fans on. It support 32 mm tall ram with two fans. But if you have a wide case, you can move the fan up a bit so that the ram dont touch. The noctua nh d15 is the best aircooler on the market right now, and the nh d14 is just two degrees hotter. If you want a cheap but good cooler. the coolermaster hyper 212 evo is very nice.

thanks what exactly do i look for when buying a cooler? i wanna make sure it fits. Ive never installed a cooler before.

Well, i think you should go for the Hyper 212 evo, it is cheap and cool's well. You can also do a decent overclock in the future. When you look for a cooler you want to make sure that it supports the chipset and that it support the height of the ram. You also want a cooler that can handle more tdp than the cpu. What memory do you have?

looks like i have 2 8gb ddr3 memory

🙁 yeah i dont know i bought it prebuild and just replaced the graphics card now im considering getting aftermarket cooler.

speaking of which, if my cpu is reaching 80 degrees should I not upgrade to the 980ti since its more powerful and migght overheat my cpu?

Ummm... where did THAT come from? Although it's kinda true, it is not how it necessarily works.

Just get an aftermarket cooler, man. Also, 980 Ti over 980 is not worth it due to how much money you are actually losing in the process. It would be better to wait for Pascal.

Ok , and that is where all this stemmed from because I got the 980 last week and regret it wish I got the 980ti so newegg said they would give me store credit and for another 225 bucks i can get the ti. then I started checking into my cpu temp. I want to get the cooler you listed, I just dont know if it will fit or not. I do have a small square opening on the back of my pc, and there is a fan on there, as well as the intel stock cooler on the cpu itself. I can research into how to install, I just dont know if it will fit.

Well, if you want the 980 ti and you can send the 980 in for a 980 ti you can do that if you want more power. Since you don't know the model or the specs, we can't help you. If you have a microsenter or a computer shop where you live, you can ask them and let them take a look at it, so that they can help you what cooler fit's.

If you don't have a cheap loser case, H7 Cryorig should fit. 212 EVO is questionable.

Can you send a pic of your case?

sure do you want me to send a pic with the side panel off? and where do i send pic to
