Hello everybuddy[is this word-coin cute?], finally i've found a *home* here
as an ADOM fan in China, Main land,a country might be an 'ancient domain of
mystery' to people living in western country. It's difficult for me to find
other Chinese who play ADOM for the following reasons:
1.Language gap. Chinese characters is completely different from English
words.
2.Culture gap. An good example is that the Dragon in Chinese is a symbol of
nobility and purity, like the role of Unicorn in western culture.
3.A relatively low ratio of computer owner in population: only 9 in 1000.

So you can imagine how excited i felt when i got here. I feel not lonely
again.

Now a question about using potion of invisible in shop.

According to the guidebook 0.13.7, a technique to rob a shop is described as
the following:
'Therefore, the usual technique is to enter the shop while visible, gather
up everything in the shop and drop it all as close to the door as possible.
The PC can then become invisible, pick up everything and leave the shop
undetected as long as the above message is not generated.'
[The 'above message' is "-Shopkeeper- stares at your position with great
intensity." ]

In my version of ADOM Winbeta4, i found the thing somewhat different. My
gnome merchant Zel Jah,who specialize in potion and therefore starting the
game with a heap of 3 potion of invisible, entered Barnabas' shop in
Lawenilothehl and found the 7LB sold for 3xxx gp. Jah can afford it easily
later, but at that moment he had only 1xxx gp. Just for a try he wanted to
make a shoplifting. He did as the GB says, picked up the 7LB and other 5
items when being invisible. But unfortunately the shopkeeper noticed him and
the message generated before he could pick up the 4th item( a ring of fire
resistance, IIRC). Jah felt a kind of guilty with his unsuccessful robbing
aiming at his craft brother, and decided to abandon the dirty plan and buy
the items later. I issued the keyboard command ':d'-'y', 'extented
drop'-'drop all items unpaid'. Jah left the shop with a politely goodbye and
examined his inventory...

What?! The 7LB and other 2 items were in his backbag! That means, there 3
unpaid items picked up before the shopkeeper noticing him were smuggled out.
It's not the way as the GB said, PC need smuggle items out of the shop
before the message generated.

Since I didn't carry more experiments, has anyone done the same as Jah's
story in other games? Maybe the GB or the Winbeta4 version needs a little
modify.

Welcome to the group! Your English is excellent, might I also add.

As for your problem, there is a *small* time lapse between picking up items.
What you encountered was your first 3 items picked up, were picked up while
invisable and unseen by the shopkeeper. So you didn't have to pay for them,
ever, they were considered yours.

The fourth item sparked the attention of the shopkeeper, and so he saw you
picking it up (Or noticed it vanish) and you have to pay for it and all
other items forever.

You can never rob the same shop while invisable after you've been seen,
also. If a shopkeeper sees you invisable once, he'll always be able to see
you when you are invisable.

I havn't read the GB recently, but I think it covered this somwhere else. I
can't remember, you'd have to correct me if I'm wrong on that count though.

A little modify?
Bah. Seems perfectly realistic to me.

Think about it:
#1 You turn invisible
#2 You pickup a item
#3 repeat #2 until the message is shown
#4 drop unpaid-for items and leave with stolen merchandise

Obviously, the shopkeep would NEVER know that you had taken objects
until the message is shown, thus all objects stolen before that message
aren't noticed by the shop keeper, and are safe to take out of the
shop.

And GJ on getting those boots. They're real life-savers.

Welcome to the community! It's great that you're enjoying it here. And I
think we might benefit from having an Eastern perspective on the group
and the game. It may well prove enlightening.

Ah, Usenet. Where else will you find Americans, British, Russians and
Chinese posting in harmony? :)

<on robbing shops>

I don't have anything to add here; Adam covered it pretty well.

Shame that we're using this international resource to perfect our skills
when it comes to petty pilfering...

And it wasn't until the 16th century that Southern Europeans began
using the tomato (originally from South America).
