Was cleaning pc, was going to remove the cpu's heatsink/fan and the cpu came off along with the heatsink when i removed the fan/heatsink. The old thermal paste glued the cpu to the heatsink.

I've applied rubbing alcohol an innumerable amount of times, tried using dental floss with it, i even tried with a new tooth brush, i only got 1 corner clean off the paste by like 2mm. I tried heating up the heatsink (applied an iron [for ironing] on the heatsink since i dont have a hair drier and i cant plug the cpu back into the motherboard). I'm about to try hammering it down because i don't know what else to do. I can't plug it back into the motherboard because the fan doesnt allow space for me to lift the socket's lock thing to place it back on and lock it. The rubbing alcohol im using says "96°" so i assume that's 96% isopropyl alcohol. Also when I heated the heatsink i did so to the point where it becomes too hot to keep my finger on it, not sure if heating it more than that would help.

Any other ideas before i go buy a hammer at walmart?

Yes the floss method didn't work.

But hey guys, I finally separated them, i lightly clamped the cpu to a vise, and lightly hit the heatsink with a rubber hammer, and voila! Now i have no idea if the cpu is still functional considering the trial of things that i've done trying to separate it from the heatsink. The other night i left it submerged in alcohol, and before that i did apply some force to it and also heated it up. I would have tried the vise earlier but i didn't have access to it until today so pray with me for the cpu to work.

I was about to put the whole thing in the oven luckily this worked LOL
Man, that sucker must have gotten HOT! Try some of this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100010&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Thermal+Compound+%2f+Grease-_-N82E16835100010&gclid=CJmot4_yickCFQ6OaQod8ioG7A&gclsrc=aw.ds
The #1 bottle contains the best thermal paste dissolver I've ever used. Try to let it work between CPU and heat sink as best you can. May have to let it sit overnight. But it usually dissolves the old dry TIM in about a minute or less when you have access to the surfaces.

Hope you didn't damage the socket when you pulled it out with the locking lever still closed. If that is what happened.

Hello, I heard that the paste dissolver is basically the same as the high purity rubbing alcohol. Anyway, how would i go about letting it sit overnight? any ideas? do i just put the whole thing inside a bowl filled with the solution? should i leave the pins out of the solution leaving the heatsink/fan submerged in it? Would this be safe to do with the high purity rubbing alcohol? The alcohol did seem to work really well when i used it to remove old gpu paste, but there's just barely any surface for it to dissolve the paste between the cpu and the heatsink. The socket seems fine although I'm not sure how the cpu came out if it was locked heheh. Thanks!

yes, i flossed out like 3mm from one of the corners and kept trying to floss more to no avail, and i did floss a lot. I might try again today for thirty mins or something to see if i really can't help it like that

If the floss stops part way thru, the surfaces may be welded from excessive heat. Have you noticed high-temps before trying to remove the cooler?

The solvent comes in too small of an amount to soak the whole affair in it. I was thinking of setting the cooler/CPU on its side and dripping some Cleaner in the slight gap you made with the floss. Doing that every so often. I'm not sure submerging the CPU in any kind of solvent is a good idea. Hard to say what the solvent that seeps under the lid will do to the thermal material between die and heat spreader.

I agree with CountMike, when I removed my old fm2+ socket cooler a good few months ago as I was doing a rebuild all I did was twist left and right very gentle twice each way and it came off.

AMD sockets I find are way more robust than Intel's. My first socket 1150's pins got bent even when I was so careful putting the i5 in its socket, second times the charm though when I RMA'd the board and tried again and its sitting in my pc at home right now, its thanks to that little CPU I can play Fallout 4 and Killing Floor 2.
