I just received my new Plextor 12/10/32A CD-RW drive today and it installed like a breeze on Win2k. I then installed Adaptec EZ CD Creator, and some of the included Plextor software. I updated EZ CD Creator to v4.03, and the first time I ran CD Copier, it gave me an error saying I didn't have a valid CD Writer. So I look and sure enough: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
Windows recognized the drives fine before, but all of a sudden theyre gone. They show up in Device Manager but with a "!" and the above error message. They do not show under My Computer at all. PLEASE HELP, I NEED MY CD-ROM DRIVE!!!!

Did you try removing the drives (from device manager, not physically!)then rebooting to see if Windows would properly re-install them? Might be worth a shot.

I just installed the same Plextor drive on Win2K a couple of weeks ago and everything went fine.

Good Luck.

There's no such thing as gravity, the Earth just sucks.

I have the same drive (tbird 1-gig also) and recommend using Nero!! It blows EZCD away in both function and creating music CD labels. I might be able to get you a serial number also. Make your you set the drive to udma. Win2k, by default, sets the drive to pio mode.

Doc

P.S. Does your hd show up as using udma in the device manager? I have a Soyo mb with the VIA 686b chipset which supports ata100 with a WD ata1000 drive is hooked up to it and win2k would run the drive in pio mode. I've read that this will be fixed in sp2. I used wd's utility to set the drive to ata66 and win2k now reconize's it as udma.

i cant get the plextor drive to run in udma mode, but my toshiba 48x drive and my hard drive both run udma without a problem-- under my secondary ide channel i have the plextor drive set to run dma if possible, but it still runs pio mode
and i would really appreciate a serial for nero, ive used it before, but it sux wihtout unlocking, thanks

I've had the same thing happen to me when I installed my HP cd-writer software (which includes CD creator). Both my HP writer and my DVD drive were gone. I tried reinstalling the drives even took them out and back into the case, but at the end I had to reinstall Win2K to get them working again.
Now I just use Nero to do all my burning. There is something definately wrong with easyCDcreator on Win2K.

i found the problem. through process of unistallation i have deduced that it was the bundled plextor software, the adpatec shiznit was alright, but i use nero now anyway

Hi I had the same problem!!!! I have an HP 9150i and I installed the software that came with it (Direct CD from Adaptec) and I contacted the HP tech support center and here is the reply from them: Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Customer Care e-mail support.

According to your e-mail, you are getting an error code 31.

After installing the HP CD Writer software, the system displays an error
code 31 in Device Manager. Uninstalling the HP CD Writer software does
not eliminate the error. Adaptec is aware of this problem and the issue
will occur when Windows Media Player 7 and Direct CD are both installed
in Windows 2000. To eliminate this error, go to Start, Settings,
Control Panel, then Add Remove Programs. Highlight "Media Player 7
Components" and click on Add/Remove. In the next window, choose "Remove
Windows Media Components". You will be given a list of items with check
boxes. Place a check in the "Adaptec CD Burning Plug In" check box and
click OK. Reboot the system and verify the error is no longer displayed
in Device Manager. If you receive errors about missing DLL files when
the system is rebooted, reinstall the Direct CD software.
