Question Help Choosing Between Lenovo T490 (MX250) and HP ProBook 640 G8 (i5-1145G7 Iris Xe)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice to help settle my decision between two laptops for light video editing (DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro), web development, and general use.

The two machines I’m considering:

1. Lenovo ThinkPad T490 ($270)
Intel Core i7-8650U
Nvidia GeForce MX250 (10W)
24GB RAM
512GB SSD

2. HP ProBook 640 G8 ($330)
Intel Core i5-1145G7
Intel Iris Xe Graphics
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
FHD Display

What matters most to me is a smooth light video editing (nothing too heavy, just casual YouTube projects, some basic effects and color correction);

Reliability and durability
Good thermals and stable performance over long sessions
Reasonable battery life

What I know so far from searching is that CPU-wise, the i5-1145G7 in the ProBook should be faster than the i5-8265U in the T490.

GPU-wise, opinions are mixed. Some say the Iris Xe is faster than the MX250 (10W version) by up to 20–30%, others say the MX250 still wins.

So Which one would really perform better in light video editing, MX250 or Iris Xe 80EU?

I'd get the HP laptop listed above. I wouldn't invest on the 8th Gen Mobile Intel platform, not in 2025.
