Help i5 8600k

Hey all I've been reading up on the oc forums but I was wondering if anyone else can tell me if this is alright.

MSI Z370 PC PRO
I5 8600K
RAM X2 8GB CORSAIR VENGENCE
PSU COOLER MASTER 600LITE
COOLER COOLER MASTER 240LITE

new to the OC scene to be honest been reading and messing about not wanting to over do it I've of my i5 8600k to a modest 4.5ghz I know it's not it's full potential but started to worry when I ran prime and stays at a steady 71c.

I've change in bios on board to run at 45 (4500mhz) and change the setting to force all cores to run at 4.5 turned off the boosting ability and everything else is on auto as I followed a previous post on here for 5ghz but I know not every chips simple also cpu z say my cpu is running on the TDP OF 94/95 can anyone help me or enlighten me as what I could do to get a better temp thankyou in advance

what are you using to cool your cpu? typically for over clocking you will need a after market cpu fan, or a closed loop water cooler

me personally i dont like my temps going over 70c other people dont let there cpu go over 80c

I have a cooler master 240lite on cpu I have 4 140mm fans 3 intake at front and 1 at the back

70 degrees at 4.5GHz is about right and no issues on Prime95. Which version of Prime95 were you using as if it was anything other than 26.6 then your temps are very good as 26.6 does not stress the CPU with AVX... You can go higher but will have to start playing with your vcore voltage which can reduce temps a little. I managed to get mine to 4.8GHZ at 1.295v and that was more than fine at around 68 Degrees C though I was running a 360 AIO. My current 8700K is at 4.9 GHz at 1.325 vcore...I use an ofset in the BIOS. I am not sure how the ofset mode works on MSI motherboards as I am using a Gigabyte motherboard so do read up on an ofset mode for the MSI.

I think I have confused you slightly with the ofset as I meant it in terms of the vcore and having an adaptive mode so that the voltage drops when not beeing used and tops out at 1.325v at max load...no worries though as what you have currently put it up to with a 4.8GHz at 1.295v is good, in fact I would go as far as dropping the AVX ofset to -2 and you should still be okay on temps....And yes you are right, do not worry about the TDP only the Temps and the Voltage going through your CPU matter...The 8600 and 8700K can hapilly handle 1.35v and more though for me 1.3 ish is about my own personal limit. Others seem to be happy reaching 1.4v which I think is way to much for daily use....

Do I need to disable c state as it's running on auto I tried adaptive and it went upto 1.342 scared myself so it's on auto now which seems to keep a stable vcore for me I only use it for gaming I don't stream or do any kind of editing when playing games my temp hardly reaches 60c mainly about 57c

Your setup looks more than fine and you do NOT need to disable C states...leave it on. Temps are great as well as 50 to 60 degrees in games is more than good...Good luck on your overclocking journey..

Thanks it's prime95 what concerned me nearly hitting 90c but I delved into it and it's something called avx so I've put it on -3 so it still runs at a steady 75c noticed my cpu underclocks to 4.5 but from what I've read avx is only used in video editing and rendering programs not games which I don't use myself should I use prime
95 ver 26.6 for a better representation for gaming? Without the avx as I would like to try to get it upto 5ghz thank you

For Intel the Prime95 version 26.6 is recommended and will give you a fairly good idea as to temps at significant load...

I will get ver 26.6 give that a try as the newer version I used stopped one of the workers before I put a avx-3 on bios, any ideas what I should aim for to make my cpu run at 5ghz? Thanks again

Some people can get there 8600K's to run at 5GHz at only 1.285v but mine needed 1.378v!!!!....I would say go to 4.9 and see if you are stable at current vcore, if not inch up on the vcore until you are stable, and then go to 5GHz...You will be safe on vcore all the way upto 1.4 but that would just be too much for me and then temps do come into play. Just depends on your chip. Most get away with 1.3 to 1.37 for a 5GHz. You might have to play with LLC (mine is set to High). Once you get to 5GHz, try to drop Vcore in very small increments and keep testing with Prime95 26.6 for stability.

Wow that's quite high at 1.378 with llc set to high doesn't it take it over the 1.4vcore? I don't want to break the magic 1.3vcore on my mobo being a budget msi pc pro board if I can't reach 5ghz it's not a big problem since this is my first time actually oc, on a separate note I have the corsair vengeance 3000mhz I switched XMP on but on cpuid it's registers that it's running at 4400mhz shouldn't it run at 6000mhz as it doubles ?

Yep, I think I lost the silcon lottery and you won the silicon lottery...Whenever I go for a 5GHz overclock the vcore requirements for a stable overclock hit 1.378..I do use a Turbo LLC at 5GHz and it does not run over 1.378 then...That is why I stick to a 4.9GHz overclock instead of 5GHz!!!!

As to RAM, funnily enough, I have the same RAM running XMP profile 1 at 3000MHz and when checking in HardwareInfo it is runninbg at the correct speed of 2 x 1500 = 3000MHz and it should be running at no more than 1.35volts...

I've just got it on auto didn't want to mess with the ram just didn't know if it was normal to be running at 4400mhz just enabled xmp. from 4.8 to 5ghz is only 4% increase I think my next step what's letting me down is the r9 270x 4gb sapphire gpu lol.

Hi, no it does not automatically select XMP profile 1. You have to go into the BIOS and set it to Profile 1. And I agree, get the 1080ti if you can, I was lucky and got a 1080 non Ti at retail before the prices went sky high... I believe the new 1180 will be coming out in July, so it might be worth waiting for that or whatever AMD can do with the new Radeon...

That is a great price for a 1070ti and they are very good GPU's as good as my MSI 1080 ...Go for it...
