Hey guys,

My entire system specs are in signature. R 7 1700X running at 3.8Ghz, with a Hyper 212 EVO, in a Phanteks P400S case

My idle temps are around 38 to 42 C and I want to get those temps down to 30-32 C on idle. My house is AC'd and normally sits at about 22.5C to 24C. My PC pretty much runs 24/7. Running Prime95 gets my PC to about 64-66C, running for at least 20 minutes.

Going to replace the Hyper 212 Evo with a front mounted radiator (can't fit anything on top, not enough clearance) to hopefully reduce the temps.

The front can fit a 240, 280 or a 360mm radiator.

Been considering either the MasterLiquid 240 or the MasterLiquid 280 Pro.

I'm stuck on making a choice because I am not sure which would be more beneficial.

1. Having just the 280mm radiator up front

or

2. Installing the 240mm radiator on the top portion of the front and then placing a 120mm fan underneath it, since it can fit 3 x 120mm

Was thinking option 2 would be better, as it may help get a little extra cool air for the GPU, although half of the bottom fan is covered up by the PSU shroud/hard drive cage.

With that said, would the smaller radiator make a large impact on the CPU temps or would the additional fan help the GPU and the 240mm radiator would be fine for the CPU?

The case currently 1 stock 120mm fan and 2 120mm SP Phanteks up front as intake and 1 stock 120mm fan in the rear as exhaust. I got the SP fans because the front of the case is solid with only 2 small vents on the top and bottom.

The case would also have enough clearance to do a push pull on the radiator and I am not opposed to buying a few extra fans.

So, 280 or 240mm?

Thanks for your time and your input.

Thanks!

Solution
The airflow from a 360 would be slightly (very slightly) lower than a 240 and extra fan, but it would be more efficient and effective at cooling your cpu
@Agathor, I am not opposed to a 360. The 360 would be on the same boat as the 280, where no extra fans could be placed up front. Given, there is another 10% surface area on the 360. Would that surface area calculate to more cool air than putting the extra 120mm below a 240mm?

Glad I could help, and as long as you pick from a reputable brand the performance won't be far from the competition.

Their nothing wrong with those temps.

Ended up buying the Masterliquid 240, as it was on sale for $60.00, and just couldn't beat the bargain.

It does good enough for what I need, as long as I have the front cover off the case. So, next thing I am doing is mod my case and put a mesh front on it.

Without cover, Prime 95 for 20 minutes, at 3.9Ghz, gets me 67C package temp.

With the cover, it hit 75C and I immediately ripped the cover off, as I wasn't comfortable with any higher.

P.S. My previous Prime95 runs were at 3.7Ghz, so an extra 0.2 Ghz at the same temps as the Hyper 212. My original pot was incorrect when I stated 3.8. Sorry
