I need help! I have no idea how to do this correctly. My Sony Vaio laptop is 5 years old and I dont haveany recovery disk for it . I am currently missing my Windows Root.system32\ntoskrnl.exe. file. I did currently purchase Windows 7 but it will not let me install until the file is fixed! What can I do? I mind you I am using spare laptop that is more than 10 years old Windows XP Professional and its very slow and annoying. Someone please help step by step would be great! Thanks so much

This error is many times a hard-drive issue. What version of Windows 7 did you get? If you got an upgrade, you may be out of luck as you'd need to wipe the drive to re-install windows. The best thing to do is to buy a new hard-drive for the laptop and install Windows 7 on that. Since you are probably looking at a drive issue, unless you got a virus that deleted files, re-installing Windows on the same drive is a very bad idea.

You will need the old OS media to install an upgrade copy of Windoes though as it will look for the files for that. You may need to get a different version of Windows 7 if you got the upgrade in your case, or at least find a Vista disk.

If the program has a boot disk you can make, you can run it off that. Does not look like it does though, at least it's not listed anywhere.

Best thing is to get a new drive, and run the Windows setup on that. It will ensure you are not installing over a bad drive that will end up crashing again.
