I currently own an Alienware PC with the following specs:

i5 9600K
16 GB @2993
RTX 2070

Given that the CPU to a i7 9700k, or an i9 9900k
My PC can take RAM up to 3200 speed, and i would like to run virtual machines.
And my Video card is not changed..

Where to i get the best value in upgrading... the CPU? the RAM? combination of the two.... or is it better for me to go new with a 10th Gen Intel CPU, or latest Ryzen.... and faster RAM.

Cost is a consideration in the upgrade.. if it is too much for little gain vs a newer build?

Thanks for any feedback

I have a need to host some local VM's about work on my PC... hence the need for more RAM and more Cores available to host the VM's

Trying to get the most out of a simple 400 dollar budget... RAM is still cheap so it probably will be easy for me to go to 32 GB.

BTW i am in Canada.

Aurora R8 Intel model
It doesnt take 10th GEN CPU.
I like the idea of a 9900k.. but is it worth spending more on that CPU than a 10th GEN 10900?

It may be easier for me to do a new system... i have a PSU and case ... just would need to buy RAM which would be better anyways.

I dont want to upgrade a PC to get 20% performance..when i can do a new system and get 30+ % performance

Also for a "new build" i would increase my budget to get a decent MB/high CPU core count/64 GB RAM

I dont want to remove components from my existing PC.... i use that for Gaming..

SO basically i am using my Gaming PC for work... which is okay but since i only have 6 cores and 16 GB ram i cant do much virtualization.

Sounds like i may end up going for a new build...

probably a 10850K with 64 GB RAM and MB.. should be around 900 CAD... hmm better that and get a second system than upgrade my gaming PC.

a 9900K should extend your rig's life another few years...

Assuming your mainboard has 4 RAM slots, you can try tossing in another pair of 8 GB modules, or, just find a 32 GB kit (2 each 16 GB sticks)

Yes my pc can take 4 RAM .... have a pair of 8GB 2933's in there now.

True but that is still a 500 to 600 dollar upgrade..(i dont buy used components).. Right now i can get a i9 10850k for 499 vs a i9 9900k at 449.... to me it is worth the extra 50$

when i could go new .. get 10 cores/20 threads instead of 8/16..... with 32 GB ram for 800 to 900

I am not complaining at all about my gaming experience on my current PC as i usually play strategy games anyways

Remember this is an Alienware PC... with cramped space and not so great cooling.

OR

I can be patient.. wait for all the new DDR5 stuff.. and get some of the older stuff on discount.... but that will be 1-2 years away.
