Battlefield 3 1080p in ultra with an i5 2500k oc to 4.0 ghz

Prices
460=100
560=160
4870x2=160

I don't plan on going sli/xfire so that isn't a deciding factor. I have a 700w psu so that doesn't matter either.

is that better than the above? I thought it was about the same as the 560 performance wise and im more into nvidia, but if it performs alot better in bf3 I will go in that direction.

For the price he won't be able to run ultra settings. But if he did up the price range to $200-250 he could get a 560Ti or the 7850 (which performs similar to the 570 for less and it is an improvement on the 560Ti 448 for the same price). In your current price range I would get the 6870 because is is cheaper than the 560 for about the same performance.

560- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121446
6870- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561
560Ti- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130623
7850- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102986 but if you have to buy now then this would have to be my choice of them in stock http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125419

If you have the power also consider a GTX 480. It is basically a GTX 570 but it uses a little more power and runs a bit warmer. It still supports DX11 and like the 570, when you overclock it you reach GTX 580+ speeds. The GTX 480 on newegg.com is 250$ (100$ less than 7870, 6970, and 30$ less than a GTX 570) but it was on sale before for 200$ so if you wait it may go on sale again. At this price it is a much better option than a 560 ti(210$) or a 560(180$).

Honestly though if you are willing to overclock it a 560 or 560 ti would run the game quite well. If you are really wanting to max it out you'll want to spend a little more.

The 7850 is the same price and performs better than that so ...NO.
Same can be said about the 480 the 7850 performs similar/better for the same price.

Oh I see, you really want to see the performance on BF3. The 560 should be a bit faster I think, but the 6870 has lower power consumption and usually cheaper. It depends on you, when you like nVIDIA and really care about BF3 performance then go ahead with the 560. It's a pretty good one. This is a pretty good basic Comparison at anandtech bench. It shows that the card trade blows, with the exception of some aspects. And the 560 performs better with BF3.

7870? How much faster is that than the 7850? is it worth the extra money? If its a huge difference I guess i could go 350 as max. but no higher...
