Hello everyone,

I have an nvidia FX 5900 (NV35 chip, 128MB DDR, 400Mhz core, 425Mhz memory, 256 Bits, 4x2 pixel shader (why isn't it just labeled 8?), 3 vertex shader), and I'm thinking of upgrading for Oblivion. I have an agp mobo, 3ghz cpu, and 1g ram (forgot speed 🙁).

Should I get the 6800GS (NV40, 256MB GDDR3, 350Mhz core, 500Mhz memory, 256 Bits, 12 pixel shader, 5 vertext shader, overclockable+unlockable), or a 7800 GS (G70 chip, 256MB GDDR3, 375Mhz core, 300Mhz memory, 256 Bits, 8 pixel shader, 6 vertex shader) for an upgrade?

I saw somewhere that people say the 7 series will be alot better at HDR, SM, than the 6 series even though both of them support the features. Would the rest of my system (I think my ram is either PC2700 or PC3200) be bottleneck enough that I wouldn't notice the difference between a 7 and a 6? Or would the difference be like night and day (some people say 7800 gs is alot better than their old 6600gt, would I see the same difference between a 7800 gs and a 6800 gs)?

How would you guys think either of the gs's would compare with my current fx 5900 in playing oblivion? (would there be a huge difference? should I upgrade at all now or wait longer? I read somewhere that oblivion is heavy on the shading, but I'm not sure)

Anyways, if you're not tired of all the reading so far , since I'm hoping to spend less than 350 bucks upgrading, should I upgrade just the graphics card or go to pci-e altogether (for pci-e, do you guys know of a good mobo so that I wouldn't have to buy a new intel p4 processor?, plus I'm new at assembling my own pc).

Alright, this is it for now 😀 , hopefully I haven't asked questions that's been answered in other posts, I've been snooping around the web for so long that my eyes hurt as heck, and I haven't checked around the forum too carefully  .

Thanks so much everyone😀
(P.S. the 6800 gs looks like it's beating 7800 gs on all the specs, number of shaders etc, even my fx5900 has faster core speeds than both, how did they change the 7 series so it's so much better than the 6 (or is it so much better?); I thought G70 is just smaller than NV40)

OK ... Upgrading From 5900 ( I Had a Sparkle 5900 Last Year ... ) To GeForce6 or 7 Is a Huge Upgrade Friend ... I Suggest GeForce 7800 GS , It Is Better Than 6800GS in All The Tests ... But My Recommand is To Buy a PCI-E Mobo and Get a 7600GT ... Ist Better ... 7800GS Isnt Worth The Money ... But If You Dont Like To Upgrade The Mobo Try XFX 7800GS Extreme Edition

Oblivion will probably tear your current FX a new one if you try and play it. My guess is you'd have ot crank the settings way down to get playable frame rates. IF you have the money definately hit up the 7 series, but the 6 series will not dissappoint though you may have to scale backa few minor options depending on you resolution. If you plan high res (1280x1024 +) then definately shoot for the 7 series.
