help please

i just got a wireless pci card Net Gear, and a D link router...
i hooked them both up, i got the signal it was pretty good, connected, signal dropped to one bar, then some where along the line of trying to boost the signal, i cant detect the router any more, and, i am connecting to other peoples routers that are further away from my house than my own router is, so i dont think that its a case of not picking up the signal, any help would be great thanks a ton

Let's start by eliminating as many issues as possible.

Ensure your router is on a non-interfering channel from your neighbors
(1, 6, or 11; if they are on 6, you should be on 1 or 11, etc.)
Put the router and your adapter into a standard mode (11b or 11g) - disable any proprietary "turbo" modes.
Put the router and your computer next to each other.
Disable security.
Does it worK? Is the signal excellent?

If yes, then move the computer back to where you want to use it.
